During the Civil War the North won with huge numbers of Scotch-Irish and German soldiers. At the turn of the 20th century there was a U.S. Army recruiting station at the Battery (now a park) in New York's lower Manhattan. This was near were immigrants processed from Ellis Island and 2nd and 1st class passengers were landed. Needless to say that more then a few young single males made it into uniform. Got a foreign born in good health, a grasp of English, and no job? Enlist him!

there are no current laws prohibiting U.S. citizens from joining a foreign military that is not a belligerent with the U.S. U.S. citizenship law states that a U.S. citizen may join a foreign military and retain U.S. citizenship as long as they do not have the intention of legally and voluntarily relinquishing their U.S. citizenship, something they must physically do at the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate. Note that the Australian government is currently enlisting qualified U.S. veterans in the Australian military.

In 13 seconds of googling i found this.
Would you like to rephrase your bullshit statement sir?

During the american civil war, new migrants totalled some 300,000 of the total Northern fighting force of about 2.2 million men. i've no idea where you get your information from, but no new migrants were processed on Ellis until 30 years after the war.

1834 By the terms of an interstate agreement, Ellis Island and neighboring Bedloe's Island (renamed Liberty Island in 1956, site of the Statue of Liberty) were declared part of New York State, even though both islands are on the New Jersey side of the main ship channel. Ellis continued to serve as an arsenal until 1890. Nearby residents of Jersey City, Manhattan and Brooklyn worried for years about explosion of the powder magazines.
1890
The States turned over control of immigration to the Federal Government. The U.S. Congress appropriated $75,000 to build the first Federal immigration station on Ellis Island. Artesian wells were dug, and landfill (from incoming ships' ballast and New York City subway tunnels) doubled the size of Ellis to over six acres. While the new immigration station was under construction, the Barge Office on the Battery on the tip of Manhattan was used for immigration reception. During 1891, there were 405,664 immigrants, or about 80% of the national total, that were processed at the Barge Office
.

Meanwhile the U.S. has always had lots of foreigners (non-U.S. citizens) in its armed forces. Since September 11, 2001 there have been efforts to recruit even more foreigners. For example in 2009 the U.S. Army made a major effort to recruit foreigners in the U.S. who had special skills (fluent in Arabic or Afghan languages, doctors, nurses) that were in great demand. There was some concern that this would provide a way for terrorist organizations, or foreign intelligence agencies to infiltrate the U.S. military but there was never any evidence of this happening. Recruiters believed they had adequate screening capabilities to prevent this.

BULL.

CANUKUSA    Scottish or Scots.    8/22/2014 9:58:35 PM
I believe that you mean to say Scottish (good), or Scots (better) as in the famous regiment, The Scots Guards. SCOTCH is a beverage made mostly from malted barley and clean water which is rarely drunk by the Irish who drink Irish Whiskey. Scotsmen drink whisky, not whiskey and only the pansied arse English or Americans who don't know anything about SCOTCH, drink whisky and soda. Just watch your language around the mess, OK mate?

The military can recruit individuals who are legal immigrants and have a Green Card.. Foreign Nationals not having immigrant status are not eligible to enlist..
