If you think something has happened and you're contaminated, take a shower. That's all decomtamination plants are, giant showers. The deal is the authorities don't really want the run off from you going anywhere, hence herding people to the plants, but do you really want to stand in line for 48 hours? Just some advise I was given from the local civil contingency planner in the UK..

"Stocking up" on NBC protection equipment is pretty useless. You must carry it with you at all times and you must be trained to use it within seconds of an attack, otherwise you'll be as dead as if you didn't own any. By the end of WWI, gas readiness rules for troops in a combat zone were to carry their masks slung on their chests for faster reaction time. Tabun kills you 30 times faster than phosgene which was the deadliest agent back in 1918. Now do you still want to waste your time and money? On the other hand, given the pollution level in NYC, actually wearing a gas mask there at all times might not be such a bad idea...

"Just some advise I was given from the local civil contingency planner in the UK.." Yeah? The advise we got was to run for the hills...! In all seriousness, getting an NBC suit and respirator while stocking up on some water isnt a bad idea. The British NBC suit is light weight and decent enough. That way, if you are at home watching the telle and you see something on the news, you are good for a couple of days. Of course, if it's a persistent agent which lasts more than a couple of days, your fecked anyway, but such is life.

There's a few misconceptions and misunderstanding in earlier posts. A good point to remember is that in WW1, with very primative (by modern standards) Chem def eqpt Brit troops survived weeks of almost continuous gas attacks, anyone who disagrees read some of the battery accounts fron 3rd Ypres in 1917, to get it first hand. The first point is how far vapour will drift with the wind and still be in a lethal concentration, given that chemical fireplanning has to get quite high concentrations (parts per million). This depends on how much was delivered and the met conditions at the time. It's highly unlikely that terrorists could release sufficient vapour to present a deadly downwind hazard of any significant distance even in ideal met conditions (called 'lapse' where there is an inversion layer), that said some folk might get a bit poorly but will probably survive. Next, people often get confused about the nature of CW, basically there are persistant agents that evaporate fairly slowly giving off vapour as they do so. The main risk from these is their 'contact' hazard, getting agent on your skin. However, since your house probably keeps the rain out it will also keep chemical liquids out so you only have to worry about the vapour. Non-persistent agents evaporate very quickly and don't present a contact hazard except at the moment of delivery, this means they don't hang around for long. Decontamination is only required if things are 'wet' with persistant agent. If it's you and on your skin the urgency depends on the nature of the agent. Water won't be much use because the agencts are slightly oily and water won't neutralise them. The best readily available thing for dencontaminating most things execept people is a bleach slurry, swimming pool powder chlorine is just the job. The nerve agents are the real killers and very fast acting. Some are persistant and some non-persistant, in either case if you have any on your skin you're almost certainly a goner very quickly, unless you can instantly decontam. However, some of the P evap very slowly and it depends on the temp, on a cool day you may be able to walk away from a bucketful. A final point, vapours can be absorbed by fatty foods, so avoid Macdonalds. Ingesting CW agents is seriously bad for your health.

"A final point, vapours can be absorbed by fatty foods, so avoid Macdonalds. I always avoid Maccas. My family accept that this habit is my only religion.

Go buy yourself an NBCD suit, gloves and boots and a good respirator preferably an S10 and make sure you get a good stock of replacement canisters and detector paper. This should make a good dent in your weekly wage. Get yourself down to your doctor and get a prescription for a big box of NAPS tablets and some atropine pens. Get your doctor to give you several injections without fully explaining what they are and making vague references to plague and anthrax. Buy yourself 'the big bumper book of NBCD acronyms' and try and remember them all. Wear your suit all the time and practice putting your mask on in less than 10 seconds. Dig yourself a big trench in central park and sleep in it, practice sh*tting in a plastic bag while wearing your suit, make sure to dust your arse with fullers earth. Try drinking water through the straw on your S10 or change the canister in room filled with CS gas reciting the words to the national anthem. Get your mother to shout 'gas, gas, gas' at random times throughout the night. Worry that you can't remember when you took your last tablet or that you can't remember to take the next then and spend the rest of your life worrying about gulf war syndrome. When your are bored just don't bother about what might be and live your life.
