Subject: Treat cybercrime like terrorism?
reefdiver    11/15/2007 12:54:10 PM
Here's a quote I read today: "Cybercrime has been estimated by the U.S. Treasury to be more valuable than the illegal drug trade ? worth more than $100 billion a year."

Is it time to start treating cybercrime like the drug trade or even like terrorism?

Cybercrime poses a threat to the economies of the world. Besides the direct costs mentioned abouve, its cost in reduced productivity is staggering. It spawns massive amounts of spam, it attacks computers and networks constantly, requiring additional resources be spent on non-productive vigilence, prevention, and cleanup of such. It slows down networks accross the work. Prevention sucks up substantial resources of most computers. It also is developing the skills and resources for war-time cyber-attacks. And all this is still ignoring the use of the net by actual terrorists.

Sure the government and military have allocated some resource to this, but is it enough or does it need an all-out war against it?

Do you even start "taking out" these guys?

Should we even consider a new branch of the military (ok its a bit crazy...)?
