Subject: X-band over S-band naval radar
perfectgeneral    12/30/2005 12:35:32 PM
What are the differences in performance between radars of different wavebands? Is there an ideal bandwidth for certain radar roles? Sampson is S-band (E/F) while the Euro and US systems are X-band (I/J). Does that affect range or definition?

What are the differences in performance between radars of different wavebands? Is there an ideal bandwidth for certain radar roles? Yes. But can't find a cut and paste table on the net. Sampson is S-band (E/F) while the Euro and US systems are X-band (I/J). Does that affect range or definition? X-band used in APAR trades of range (180km?) in order to get fire-control accuracy and target illumination for the Standards and ESSMs S-band gives you longer range (400km?) but the lack accurary. But the terminal SARH of the Aster missiles compensates for this. Is also better for volume search. APAR actually needs the S1850M/Smart-L which SAMPSON alledgely doesn't.
