Subject: Fundamentally useless armoured vehicles

and now for something completely different. I thought I'd start a thread on armoured vehicles that were niche specific and in real terms sitting ducks for an enemy. Starting off with the Ontos. 4 Recoilless rifles mounted on an armoured letter box and fitted with tracks.

Yep, the Maus is a definite contender for the title. The Biggest gun is useless if you can't pick it up, let alone aim it. Pucka

Or if they could even build a gearbox to take it...... the amount of resources one of these bloody things could be used for a Panther Company or something similar......... It's just like Hitler's want for a gargantuan battleship, something comparable to the size of a Forrestal Carrier, certainly outdo Yamato and Mushashi with something like eight or ten 20 inch guns........... ...and Hitler also sunk considerable resources into the massive 800mm railroad gun, a 1350 ton behemoth supported by a 1400+ contingent (all the support elements involved, not just the gun crew). I wonder how mant tanks could've been made and manned for the same amount of resources? Had an extra 20 or so tanks and SP artillery guns been in the right place at the right time, it might well have proven a bigger contribution that the Gustav ever did..

a gun that huge? a shell that big? Was somebody compensating for something? Useless or not, I think the Maus "looked" cool when it had the prototype Flakzwilling twin 88mm gun turret. Naturally, that would have proven just as effective at tanks as the 128 + 75 original turret..
