Subject: AMX-10RC performance?
wagner95696    5/2/2004 10:41:06 PM
Does anyone have information about the in service, especially combat, performance of the french AMC-10RC? I finds lots of photos and specifications but no 'user feedback'. I am especially interested in how 'skid steering' has worked in the field on a wheeled vehicle.

What do people think about the Vextra, Rooikat 105 or the Centauro? Are these effective tank destroyers or are they still really only recon vehicles?

RetiredCdnTanker I have not served on it but I'm a loyal reader of Kepi Blanc magazine. I admit I'm not as knowledgeable about land warfare as some othwer posters here. Perhaps Couac_Attack can explain about it better than me. I agree with you the AMX-10RC is not a MBT but Foreign Legion and Marine don't have MBT. The AMX-10RC is closest thing to the MBT that they have. It's a great tank destroyer. There isn't any MBT today that it can't kill. "There is no comparison in terms of cross country mobility, protection, and firepower, which is the benchmarks of comparisons for MBT's. " It's highly mobile, not as good as tracked vehicle but certainly better than other wheeled vehicles and it can swim. It's highly protected especially in NBC enviroment and its' frontal armor is just as good and a MBT. Its' firepower is just as good as a tank. It carries 105mm gun and it can be upgunned to 120mm. It's a very advance vehicle in its class (tank destroyer, heavy recce vehicle).

AMX10 is built form the start to be very thinly armoured, and is no way near to belong in the same class with any real tank. It?s not even in level with well protected IFV?s. Armour in AMX like in many other contemporary designs is thick enough to keep armour piercing heavy mg fire away, but nothing more. Centauro is about the only one of it?s class with much emphasis being put into protection, and it?s possibly quite well all-round immune to IFV calibre gun fire and somewhat resistant to hand held at-fire. Today, it has been possible to achieve pretty nice results with 105mm calibre guns too, and many consider Centauro?s gun as one of the finest if not best in it?s class, with performance that is somewhat (still not directly) comparable with 120mm gun capabilities (ammunition is of course much of an issue, and elder 120mm of 125mm ammo is easily outperformed by this kind of weapon). That means roughly that they are still not exactly strong enough to go head-on with heavy class players, but otherwise provide well adequate weapon for big game hunt. With most 105mm guns, this is however not the case, and their capabilities are overall more restricted and chances of success against modern MBT even more narrow. As such, most of wheeled heavy recce vehicles or gun APC configurations are referred as light/cavalry tanks or support APC?s. Relatively heavy and potent gun armament is normally aimed for dominating the battlefield when MBT?s are not present, allowing potential for effective light armoured vehicle confrontation. Centauro is maybe the only one that is often directly called as tank destroyer, aimed for that cavalry tank task (which is not true with most of cases like mentioned above). And it?s maybe the only one in the world that has capabilities to also really fulfill that task. As far as AMX10 goes, it?s certainly not one of the worst things that have happened to French, and a good vehicle in it?s class but as such not unrivalled.

JUST TO SAY THAT MOST OF THE AMX 10 IN SERVICE WITH FRENCH CAVALRY REGIMENT WILL BE SOON UPGRADED AS FAR AS I KNOW THIS UPGRADE TOUCH THE PROTECTION (with armour plate // sustaining the fire of heavy mg // new smoke launcher Galix// laser warning system...), THE MOBILITY WITH NEW POWER PLANT GEAR BOX AND BRAKES , FCR ( reaction time improved 5 to 10% faster ) , THERMAL SIGHT ... AND THE MOST INPORTANT THE "SIT"INTEGRATION WICH IS A NUMERISED BATTLE MANAGEMENT ... OF COURSE WITH ALL THESE EXTRA EQUIPMENT IT LOST IS AMPHIBIOUS CAPABILITY WICH IS NOT SO IMPORTANT AT ALL SINCE THE FALL OF IRON CURTAIN NB/THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE AMX 10 HAS STARTED AND IS STILL UNDER PROCESS AND HAVE BEEN INTENDED IN ORDER TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT VEHICULE A KIND OF VEXTRA WHY NOT
