Subject: M551 Sheridan

I know the M551 was a dog, but would it be possible to give it a low recoil 105 or 90mm gun? seems like the main issue with it was the recoil from that big 152mm gun

I am curious, was the Sheridan ever used in combat succesfully. I remember reading once about it killing about 50 VC in 'nam with a single canister round, but it was a long time ago and I question the reliability of my source.

The Sheridan saw combat in both Vietnam and Panama, 1989. It was reasonably successful, although the M113 and M48 performed better. Eventually the 11th ACR was equipped only with M113's and fought very successfully with them.

But didn't most tankers who used the Sheridan hate it? I've also heard the aluminum armor was less than robust

The answer is, yes, most tankers hated the Sheridan. But the question was whether the Sheridan had seen combat and how it had done. It performed reasonably for what it was designed for in both Vietnam and Panama.

But revamping it with a lighter gun would not be a workable plan, I don't think -- 1) It's out of service, and surviving vehicles are in route to Anniston Army Depot for conversion into reefs. 2) Operating costs were rising as the fleet aged even before it was retired. 3) Its armor was not particularly robust back when introduced, and is not suitable for most applications today -- the M8 AGS would beat the Sheridan hands down, I think.

Now that nick is gonna get confusing! Anyhow, I would guess that it might be possible to retrofit the Sheridan with a low recoil high velocity gun. But why do it? As Horsesoldier pointed out the vehicle was reaching the end of its service life. And you have many of the same problems the Russians are facing with their T-72 class tanks or the US faced with the M46-60 class of tanks. The hull and turret are not designed for modern weapons systems, ergonomics and damage control. What you end up with is a modern gun that is limited by the capability of the obsolete platform it is mated to. Much better to build a whole new platform. The best choice right now, if we want to field it quickly, is the M8.
