Have you tried Operation Flashpoint? It would (literally) give you months of great fun (I presume), although it's not as fast paced as Doom, Quake etc., it's the closest as you can get to a war in your living room. It also features an extremely powerful mission editor with which you can create almost any scenario imaginable (from tank command, spec ops missions like scud hunt, save the hostages, take command of a battle group (let's say 500 troops + 1000 of enemy's; anything more is dependant of your PC) involving infantry, tanks, air support, artillery support; you can literally transform (through use of scripts which initially are a pain in the ass, but when you get the hang of it it rocks) a 3D shooter into a real time strategy game where it's up to you if you want to join the grunts in the thick of battle or command them from a cozy tent somewhere in the rear, you can script reinforcements, paradrops behind enemy lines; as I said earlier almost anything you can imagine. The official specs are a 500MHz proc., 128 RAM, 3d graphics card, but for the battle group command of the size mentioned above a min. 2GHz proc., 512RAM is required. Don't misunderstand this I'm no salesman of games but I just to play other military/shooter stuff a lot too (Unreal Tournament, Quake 1,2,3, Red Alert 2, Generals, various tank sim's etc.) but since 2 years ago when I found this I play nothing else. There's also a wide variety of game addons available on the net which allows you to put in the game your fav. weapon/s (the standard game is about a renegade Russian general who invades some god forsaken islands and NATO intervenes; It's set in 1985 weapons include M1A1, M113, M163, BMP1;2, T- 55(72,80), Shilka and so on. Demo is available on the net but if you'll like it get the whole game + 2 expansion packs (Red hammer, Resistance). They sell in a bundle, are very cheap for the potential amount of fun which you can get (in Europe around 10 euros). Enjoy!
