Subject: T-95: the end of M1A2 Superiority

The truly new design of the t95 is remarkable: first, A profile lower than T-72/80. Low profile si usual for russian tank, the objective is to make it harder to target. As you probably know if you had fire eny kind of gun at long range, is easyer to miss the right elevation than the azimuth. And it gererally make the "edge" of the front armor more sharp, more hard to penetrate. Second, a faster and reliable autoloader. the russian autoloader alway make them fire more fast incrasing the hit probability. In responce of the rapid fire of the t-62/72, the west side develop the 120mm soft bore gun, who had more range, so they can knock them out before the russian 125mm gun can fire 8 rond per minute. The new carousel autoloader design will be faster than that, and safer too because the munition is separated from the crew. third, the "inside" design of the T-95 turret For most tank, like the t72 or the M1A2, the problem is that after hit the front armor, the prjectile had the tendency to hit the base of the turret ho is a vulnerable part, specialy for the M1A2: imagine the dommage cause by a explosion in the "hole" under the turet, all the turret may lift off. that problem is totaly resolve fore the very small turret design of the t-95. The smal weight of the turrt will probably make ite faster to turn too.I just wonder how they will fit fire control system and sansor in this small box. It will be a truly awsome tank, if they have the money to finish it before the time of heavy and mediun tank will end... if this time is not already finish.

Firstly, you're in for a real debate on this one! Firstly; An unfinished, untested and most likely exaggerated tank that will be hard to fully develop, as you said for lack of funding. Being a little smaller isn't that significant on the battlefield, as several veterans on this board will tell you - most would prefer a larger and more roomier tank with better protection than something that is only a couple of metres shorter and slimmer. Those points are no advantage with today's weapons and targetting systems. The Russians need to totally rethink thier design doctrine - massed formations are of limited concept today, the western design doctrines have proven to be superior in recent times, the most recent example being Iraqi Freedom. Also, you're asserting that the M1A2 is the best tank around at the moment. Many will agree with that assertion, but be prepared for the Leclerc, Challenger 2 and the Leopard 2 to rear thier heads here too. Unless the Russians make some miracles in regards to breakthoughs and funding, they are and will be restricted in what they can do. But when they do make a totally new tank, it will be very formidable indeed. For now and into the intermediate future, the M1A2SEP and its upmarket western contemporaries will remain superior. Pucka PS. Autoloaders suck - the extra man is far more reliable and faster (for a time), and don't forget, an autoloader can't break tread and get coffee.

Do you know how much eavy is the M1a2 turret ? take this weight and add some laminated armor arond the hull and you will have a more protected tank i think ( t-95 is supose to be arond 50t the m1a2 is 54.) I didn't write any thing about mass formation you know.( they didn't do that in afganistan and checheny) I think Leopard 2 is the equal of M1A2( same weapon, same hull and same engine...) the leclerc seem tho have the same power ratio weight... the same capability. the challenger is a litle bit underpowered on the new standard (19hp/tonne) Ps. try to load a 120mm shell went your tank go at 50km/h offroad and after that tell me what is more reliable.

The design of the t-72 ave not nothing tho do with the iraqian defeat in freedom iraq.(the few they had didn had the time tho challenge the more capable m1a2) tank is nothing went you dont ave well trained crew and aviation. And i dont see any russian in Iraq to aply russian doctrin.

Wasn't the T72's auto loader prone to trying to load the commanders arm. They were also very fragile I take it all this is now resolved. I'm a fan of 4 man crews good for sharing out radio stags/op's plus maintenance issues less fatigue on the whole crew with more bodies when your out in the field.

More bodies mean higher cost in salary, and maybe more dead bodies. dont know about the old autoloader, but the new is sealed, so it cannot load the arm of the commanders. it also mean you cannot fix it if it jam... But the "carousel" design is more simple than the old one.

Yes but an auto loader can't operate the radio, help change a track and stand in for another crew member like the driver if he's injured. Plus if it breaks your F**KED in a battle.

when i read the specs you put, it looks like it's the only MBT with autoloader and that's one of the big edge (do you forget about the japanese T90, and the leclerc which also has this possibility?)

after a hard day at work it's good to be able get jokes that aren't spam. This thread made up for a really ordinary week. I wonder where the ammo bussle is for this gem? Is it still under the autoloaders floor?

Without prejudging anything: As time goes by designs tend to be rather much alike if they do the approximate same job - that is why tanks are so boring (sorry all you tankers). The differences between top MBT's are marginal. My Filosophy is that if it was possible with a PRACTICAL autoloader they would have been standard 30 years ago (barring the odd british design). The radioman disappered eons ago. For a deviant design to be successfull you need either a radical new technological breakthrough - and I don't see any - or a radical different tactical concept - I don't see that either. On the other hand: Museums are full of freaks.

exactly, it's a bit like a deja vu experience as soon as some country trots out another super tank. I guess it's akin to waiting for the next quantum leap to happen and thus being extremely skeptical when the new offerings are technically "indifferent"
