Subject: RE:Auto-loaders....good or bad?
Thomas    10/31/2003 7:23:52 AM
From what I've heard:
The heavier the caliber, the greater the propensity to size up when needed - that goes for naval applications as well. Mind you automatic small arms also have stppage problems.

But another real factor is it generally means a reduction in tank crew from 4 to 3. While theoretically possible to work the tank with 3 persons: Driver, Gunner and Commander, tank warfare rarely go according to plan:
The tank throws a track, it needs reloading - fast - and grenades are heavy, and so on. In these cases an extra man is not redundant.

You have to be carefull to calculate the extra "downtime" and reduced endurance of the tank as a whole. I don't have any figures; but a loader might be a good idea, if you plan on massive engagement and short supply lines, where the downtime doesn't matter, as the tanks and crews die at an alarming rate.
