Subject: Modern MTB family Trees

I'm not to interested in a which tank is better thread, more I'm looking to talk about tank development. There has been a lot of talk about what each type of tank was designed for. you can't full understand that unless you also look at what came before it while still having some effect on the current design perspective. I know the most about the top 4 western tanks so I'll start there but I would like you input on some of the less well known MBTs out there like tanks from Japan, Brazil and South Africa and so on.

America and Germany
With both the the Abrams and the Leo 2 are both derived from both country's experiences in the MBT 70 program. with that both tanks are Maneuver based and have an AT primary propose.

British and Israeli
you have to go back a bit farther looking at the Centurion being the starting point, with the British devolving the cheiftain then challenger series. With the Israelis devolving the Merkava. while the end results are two different tanks I believe both are defensive, the challenger are more anti tank based in design philosophy while the merkava are infantry support.

I really don't know enough to comment on French or Russian tanks so I hope you can fill in there. I believe the Leclaric is heavy influenced by the abrams but I don't really have any proof. and I know there are two major trees for Russian designs(the t-64 then the t-72)

What do you have to say?
