I had no idea about that. That definitly brings the M1A2 closer. I still think the L55 gun takes the cake though.

Don't start about cars ok...im a mechanic right now and i know its possible...you can get 900HP out of a 5 cilinder turbo VW engine! Tanks don't have normal 1500HP engines. The Leopard2A6 for example has about 47 liters(!)(US Gallons) over all cilinders where a cars 1500HP engine has only 12 or 15 liters(US Gallons)... I think the Merkava hasn't got a good power to ratio engine... I think that's Merkava's mayor problem...

>>I had no idea about that. That definitly brings the M1A2 closer. I still think the L55 gun takes the cake though. << I'd argue that the L55 gun tube simply gives parity with American DU sabot ammunition, and the lack of DU armor puts Leo2A6 at a disadvantage. M1A2SEP doesn't have to do any catching up with the Leopard, unless the using nation is going to degrade the American tank's abilities for political reasons (i.e. the recent discussion of Australia's planned procurement of a new tank).

I'd take the lack of reliable information to be indicative that the Black Eagle is not a good as the Russians claim. Given the way they've whored out anything they can sell, militarily speaking, since the walls came down, playing anything close to the vest suggests they're bluffing, not holding a good hand.

>>I think the Merkava hasn't got a good power to ratio engine...<< The math is pretty simple. Merkava Mk 1 and 2 were a little over 14 hp/ton. Merkava 3 is about 18.5hp/ton Merkava 4 is about 23hp/ton Comparatively: M1A2 and A2SEP 21.6hp/ton Challenger 2 19.2hp/ton CR2E 24hp/ton (?) M60A3 13.1hp/ton T-72: ~ 18.8hp/ton So the Merkava series are perhaps slightly low in power-to-weight compared to other tanks, but not significantly so. With Merkava 4 this tendency is no longer true in any case.
