The 13 tanks of french UN troops will stay in the country after the operation end. France will sell it to lebanese army...and tank crews of the 6-12e RC will train lebanese crew during next months. source "le canard enchainé" 7/09/2006

it's 13 tanks because an armoured squadron is composed by 13 leclercs.
i think that it will be useful for the static monitoring , a leclerc in top of a hill, idling engine and all sensors under operation make a damned defensive point. and IRIS can detect and identify threat at long range

"Defend themselves against whom?"

I honestly think there is a place for heavy armor in a peacekeeping role.  A guy with a blue hat and a rifle is just a guy with a rifle to any would be trouble maker.  Now a guy with rifle standing next to 50-70 ton tank, is just wee bit intimidating.

Now, I'm not sure how affective that kind of detterence is against the meat bomber crowd, but if detterence fails it at least gives you something to hit back hard with.

The fact that they are bringing in "13"  (if I understand correctly) should be obvious that its not a threat / detterence for Israel (now a130 may be different) but it does sound like a reasonable number should some party of Allah members decide to cause some trouble with French troops.

The idea of leaving them / selling them to Lebanon... now that seems (politely) idiotic.

The French are being wise to send in Heavy Armor for OOTW. Remeber Mog. A few U.S. Army Rangers might still be alive if the US had done that in Somalia. 13 is also a reasonable number to always have a Platoon Sized QRF of Armor available around the clock assuming maintenance procedures and mechanics are good. LeClercs though are a bit over kill for Lebanon though IMHO. Unlike France who could properly support armor, Lebanon cannot. POG could just take them out with unconventional warfare and Israel would kill them from above. So why spend all that money when a T-55, T-72 or M-60 could perform the same role for less money and maintenance issues?

"The best thing this French cav company can do is rush due south from Lebanon, and go into Israel when they can get some real training at Ze'elim or at Shizafon. At least that way they'll stay alive, and they'll also do something useful for themselves and their Izzie colleagues, that could certainly use some dissimilar training with professionals driving state-of-the-art armor."

I think leclerc will be useful in lebanon, because they offer superior threat detection possibilities at night. They will also be useful in the case of a real engagment with terrorists.

it will be risky though, because the destruction of a leclerc would be a very symbolic victory for hezbollah.
