soleil9    9/6/2006 6:14:21 PM
The 13 tanks of french UN troops will stay in the country after the operation end. France will sell it to lebanese army...and tank crews of the 6-12e RC will train lebanese crew during next months. source "le canard enchainé" 7/09/2006

Does France have an "export" model of Leclerc?   I have been under the impression most countries were reluctant to part with their very best gear. (particularly to nations that might "miss place" something like a Leclerc)

Well, that's it then!
Over at an Israeli discussion board, the guys are wondering why the eff is France sending Leclercs over to  Lebanon.
Some think they will become either Hezzie Kornet or Izzie Merk-IV fodder, depending on the direction in which the excrement finally flies off the centrifugal blower...
Now it is becoming clear that France, and GIAT, are trying to save the honor and to prove they can still make a buck with the most expensive tank in the world, and put an end to the long list of commercial failures that has plagued their Leclerc programme.
Typically, France is again providing the weapons that it's allies have declined to purchase to the enemy, since there isn't much that will stop the Hizb from seizing power in Beyrouth. It is to be noted that the same kind of blind stupidity is gripping the US as well, that are putting their money... in strengthening a Lebanese army that will soon take orders from Iran and Syria through Nasrallah.

What in the h-e-l-l is the Lebanese Army going to do with a Leclerc, that couldn't be done with a T-55 or M-60 in good working order? (I know, I know... ) They will provide interesting targets for Merkava crews someday...

hello joe6pack, no france don't have less effective export config, and 6-12e RC have leclerc serie 2 tranche 9 the last model build in 2003 with all option, and i 'm agree with sabre, lebanese army don't have capacity to use all power of this MBT , more rustic model will be more useful .

France will NOT sell the 13 leclerc MBT (propery of the army) to lebanese, that's just stupid.
"canard enchainé" is a very good satirist newspaper, who just writed that with a lot of irony. don't take seriously all what they write, even if from time to time  it's accurate.

Leclerc are here to be sure that french troops will be able to defend themselves and as a deterrent.
Leclerc is perhaps "the most expensive MBT" but it's surely not the worse.

the fact is that "canard enchainé" si often right, and in this case, it's right, and army know ( i speak with a friend officier  in 1-11 RC)   that chirac want this sell , for politicals reasons.
and it's not army own material, like all weapons of the french army it's state materiel under responsability of "ministere de la defense". chirac can sell the charles de gaulle to congo for 20? if national security commission are agree (deputy and senators, no military).

Defend themselves against whom?
I also fail to understand who this very small number of beautiful and sophisticated targets is going to deter.
Certainly not these that have ATGM's to sell, and these are a lot easier to promote on the Middle-Eastern markets than US$ 12 M+ tanks that may or may not remain in production.
As usual, the French government is again needlessly endangering French soldier's' lives for base and futile commercial purposes, but hey, who cares, they are professional troops and not conscripts anymore!
The best thing this French cav company can do is rush due south from Lebanon, and go into Israel when they can get some real training at Ze'elim or at Shizafon.
At least that way they'll stay alive, and they'll also do something useful for themselves and their Izzie colleagues, that could certainly use some dissimilar training with professionals driving state-of-the-art armor.
And don't worry about the training ammo, ours is just as good and probably cheaper than Luchaire's!

"Defend themselves against whom?"

I honestly think there is a place for heavy armor in a peacekeeping role.  A guy with a blue hat and a rifle is just a guy with a rifle to any would be trouble maker.  Now a guy with rifle standing next to 50-70 ton tank, is just wee bit intimidating.

Now, I'm not sure how affective that kind of detterence is against the meat bomber crowd, but if detterence fails it at least gives you something to hit back hard with.

The fact that they are bringing in "13"  (if I understand correctly) should be obvious that its not a threat / detterence for Israel (now a130 may be different) but it does sound like a reasonable number should some party of Allah members decide to cause some trouble with French troops.

The idea of leaving them / selling them to Lebanon... now that seems (politely) idiotic.
