Subject: Merger of tank and IFV?
westwords2020    8/15/2006 9:51:53 AM
One design for a tank in Armour magazine I found on the Web favoured the Israeli concept of carrying three infantrymen in the rear, a railgun turret with laser and solar electric charging system for all electric tank. That was far term idea. But should the MBT and IFV be merged in a vehicle having say six man squad in rear, engine in front with crew shielded by it's mass, hybrid propulsion, three man crew and turret firing multipurpose ammo in the center. Ammo would be antitank, HE, and guided AA rounds from autoloader feed by magazine in the form of concentric rings of a carosel in the hull. Say 60 rounds. Gun calibre would be 120mm to 140mm. If I had space, the vehicle would have some missiles vertically launched like Net Fires Non LOS system but that raises tank hull height.

B.Smitty: I may be wrong about the brad being air-mobile, as I said, I wasn't sure. You were dam-right, though, to want something better than the m113 ;) I do agree though that HAPC's like tanks, are a strain on logistics, nothing to do about that. There's no perfect answer, it's always a matter of balances and priorities. "Consider what NATO was facing in central Europe during the height of the cold war - 5+-to-1 ratio against in AFVs. In this scenario, the number of AT systems we could field was paramount - 16 AT systems vs 8 definitely mattered." - In such a scenario, the infantry should've been dissmounted, giving you even more firepower. Thomas: "Mother in law" - Inaccurate, but fitting. The word "Achzrit" actually means "cruel"(female) "aceofwar" - what!? The "w" in the ens stands for the first letter in my surname, not "war"! ;)

What might be of interest is that the British Army is reviving the FV 432 - essentially an M113-style box-on-tracks, albeit of steel rather than aluminium construction. With improved engine, transmission and suspension, it can handle more armour, so it has the add-on packs like the Warrior does (AFAICT), thus making it resistant to common PG7 warheads. It'll probably have slat armour too.

As to the M113: The problem is what is to replace them. Israel has found their temporary solution; but a good battlefield taxi is need for the medium forces.

The M113 is showing its age, few others are driving a 40 odd year old car.

Eventually people will find out that the only replacement for M113 is newly built M113. It's kind of like VW Beetle, Vespa P125 or Honda CB125. They'll never die, just made by different companies. Guys who designed this in 1950 faced similar problem, maybe except the prolifiration of RPGs, to what APC designers are facing today.
