Subject: Merkava 4 tanks prove their mettle in the face of advanced Russian Kornet ATGMs

July 31, 2006 Merkava tanks prove their mettle Aug. 1, 2006 2:42 | Updated Aug. 1, 2006 5:12 Merkava tanks prove their mettle By ANSHEL PFEFFER METULLA "It was a small hit; we thought they were only mortar shells," recalled Sec.-Lt. Yotam. His Merkava 4 tank had been directly hit by two anti-tank missiles. The four crew members evacuated to another tank, unscathed. Their tank was dragged back to the Israeli side of the border, south of Metulla, and technical crews clambered over it, astonished at the way it had withstood the attack. Among them were members of the Defense Ministry's Merkava Project Directorate, some with a 20-year record in the development of Israel's main indigenous weapon system. The look of satisfaction on the face of Lt.-Col. Baruch Mazliah, head of the armor department in the Merkava Project, said it all. "It did the job it was supposed to do," he said, patting the tank's side. But the success of the latest version of the Merkava did little to hide the frustration of the soldiers at the fact that despite their efforts, Hizbullah anti-tank teams were still acting, hidden in positions so near the border, within mortar range of Israel's northernmost town. The tank crews of Brigade 401 spent 36 hours in Lebanon over the weekend, cooped up in their tanks, taking "Stopit" tablets to control their bodily functions, and hunting for Hizbullah fighters in the villages of Kilah, Adisah and A-Taibe. Despite the success of the tanks and soldiers of the Nahal infantry brigade in killing about 20 Hizbullah members in and around the villages, they were still unable to eradicate their presence, as was proved by the anti-tank missile firings at the tanks returning on Monday morning. "We saw a missile flying over the border road behind us," said a tank commander. Two tanks that were hit and an engineering corps Puma AFV that had overturned just within the fences had to be dragged out by other tanks, while the artillery supplied covering fire on the hills opposite Metulla. Smoke bombs were also fired to hide the force from Hizbullah gun-sights. Altogether nine soldiers were lightly wounded in the fighting. The consensus was that with less well-armored tanks, the toll would have been much higher. "Actually most of the time it was a bit boring," complained Yotam. "My tank barely did any shooting. It was very hard to see them from inside the tank." The company commander said that he had done quite a bit of shooting. "Now we're waiting to go back in again. It wasn't easy sitting in the tank for 36 hours, but that's what we're trained to do and what the tanks are built for. We'll go back in for as long as it takes," he said. The continuing presence of Hizbullah around the border villages caused the IDF to spread a wide security perimeter around Metulla. Squads of reserve soldiers, called up 10 days ago, were stationed next to the border. This is one of the first operational tasks to be carried out by the reserve units, who haven't yet taken part in battles across the border. The fighting around Metulla hasn't allowed the local farmers to pick the apples, most still hanging ripe on the trees, some already rotting on the ground. Only the reservists have been enjoying them. On Monday night, the government was expected to authorize the use of these soldiers in wider ground operations planned to take place over the next few days within Lebanese villages.

Umh.. Where it states that the missiles were Kornets? Syrians have Kornets but as far as I know Iranians make Ra´ads that are copies of 9M14M Malyutka(AT-3) and Hezbollah has been caught using them and/or Malyutakas. Never ever seen any other AT weapons than RPG variants and those 60´s era missiles in hands of Hezbollah terrorists. Those are definately not a serious threat against Merkavas and not worth of claiming victory over "advanced Russian missile". ' So far there has been only rumours about the arrival of Kornet, but I haven´t seen or read anything clarifying about it.

Could have also been Konkurs. Iran makes those, though Konkurs isn't all that portable. Syria had Metis and Milan in the eighties, so those candidates shouldn't be ruled out either. I have my doubts about Kornet being able to reliably knock out a Merkava IV from the front, though I reckon even Malyutka-2 or Konkurs would have little trouble from the flank.

Well the Hizzies don't seem to have funding problems. Such stuff is expensive.

Well.. the frontal area hit won´t do much to Merkava even though I think that with Kornet one could be able to disable the engine with a lucky shot. In any case, Kornet is completely in another dimension when comparing to those other missiles. Konkurs/Milan isn´t much different in efficiency (penetration) when comparing to modernized AT-3 and, just more practical and more accurate. In any case with any non-top-attack weapon it is not advisable to approach a modern MBT from frontal section.

In re the Kornet: Here is a piece from the Defence Update News in December 2005 talking about Hizbollah getting the Kornet: Unconfirmed reports indicate the arrival in Lebanon of the new Russian AT-14 Kornet anti-tank missile, or an Iranian version of the weapon, which is capable in penetrating advanced armour suites. Israeli tank experts have mentioned the Hezbollah video shots from the action at al-Ghajar, clearly displaying hits on the Merkava tank. They believe that Iranian instructors have carefully studied these displays by looking for “blind” spots in which Merkava could be vulnerable to Kornet fire. http://www.defense-update.com/2005/12/al-ghajar-village-flashpoint.html Israeli Channel 10 news reported that Hezbollah are using Kornet anti-tank missiles. Kornet missiles are made in Russia and sold to Syria which gives them to Hezbollah.

Malyutka-2 is surprisingly accurate, as it shares guidance with Metis, only having a much longer command wire. Its major disadvantage, when compared to Konkurs, is its much slower flight speed. Otherwise, accuracy and penetrating power are quite similar. ZZ, do you have any links that suggest Iran is making its own Kornets? I'm not saying it's impossible but I doubt they'd be pumping out Konkurs like crazy if they could make Kornet.

I cannot find the article, but the IDF have captured a few Kornets. The article had photo's clearly showing the missle still in its storage cases. I'll post link when I can find it.

i just ran across an AP article (without very much detail unfortunately) of Metis-Ms damaging (extent unkown) Merkavas and kill soldiers. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060804/ap_on_re_mi_ea/mideast_fighting_hezbollah_s_missiles;_ylt=ApgakRgcSYZh14Zn5OwL0Lqs0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2Z2szazkxBHNlYwN0bQ--
