Subject: Bradley 25mm cannon
GOP    9/3/2005 1:04:50 PM
Is the Bradley's 25mm cannon effective against modern tanks, like the Leopard, Challenger, Leclerq, and M1 Abrams? I know that the Bradleys had some T-72 kills using the 25mm, but I was wondering if it was effective against the modern MBT.

IIRC, during Operation Iraqi Freedom an M1 was disabled/destroyed by 25mm chaingun fire from the rear. That said, the rear of the Abrams is notoriously weak. From the front? No. Not even a T72. Sides? It certainly wouldn't take a vaguely modern T80, but might get a T72, especially an export model. I'd be surprised if it got a Challenger from any angle, providing the Chally has it's war-gear on. It might get a disabling hit ong the running gear though, as that isn't entirely covered. Not sure about the others.

The 25mm gun of the Bradley would be stupid to use against a MTB when you have 2 TOW missiles to do the job. Me thinks the 25 is there to take out light armor and for fire support.

There is a reason tanks have 120-125mm guns. That's pretty much the minimum for dealing with modern 1st rank MBT's these days. There is a reason Bradley's have the TOW system in addition to the 25mm. So given that, why on earth would anyone regard the 25x137mm Bushmaster as an anti-tank weapon?

I did not know that Bradleys had TOW missiles. A TOW can pretty much tank out whatever it hits

Bradleys are supposed to use their 25MM to take on BMPs, etc. TOW is for tanks. That said, there are numerous instances in GW and OIF where Bradleys fired 25mm to suppress T-55, T-62 and T-72 to get to cover to bring TOW to bear (can't fire the TOW on the move). With the APDSDU rounds loaded, 25mm ate up 55/62 over all arcs and 72s in flank and rear.

25x137mm APFSDS can not penetrate a T-54/55/65/Type59/69 frontally at ANY RANGE! Look at the published penetration figures for 25x137, then look at the frontal armour thicknesses of those tanks - it ain't gonna happen. There were instances in ODS of Bradley's penetrating older T-series tanks but that was from the side (where these tanks have notoriously thin armour) and usually at ranges of no more than about 1,000 meters on average. I have never heard a confirmed report of 25mm penetrations on a T-72 though it is theoretically possible if the range is short enough and the Bradly gets in behind. That said, duking it out with tanks at under 1,000 meters is usually not good for the health unless one has overwhemling superiority.

It may get some track damage done to a Leopard 2, sneaking up to a faster foe would prove pretty difficult.

I will try to dig up some of my old Armor magazines from 1991 or 1992.....that is where I read about the frontal penetration.....not to mention I personally shot through the frontal slope of an M-47 hull on Red Cloud Rage Foxtrot in the fall of 1987 with my Bradley M2A1. We put a coffee can of Mogas inside the hull in th edrivers position.....I fired a 10 rounds burst at 400 meters and got a fire ball.....and hatches were in place. M47 had comparable armor protection to T-55/Type 59

I will tell you without a doubt that a 25mm can mobility kill any MBT from any angle if you know what you are doing and are lucky enough and kill a MBT from certain angles depending on what tank it is, where you hit it and range. But I would much rather use the Radio or the TOW and IN THAT ORDER to kill a MBT.
