Subject: RE: 17 pounders on Shermans

the americans refused the 17pnd at first then tried a 76mm gun developed from a naval gunb before accepting the 17. then they diverted a large proportion of the fireflys ordered by the uk for there own use. the firefly wasnt just a turret, the interior was heavely modified (removal of the hull gunner for example). the 20pnd was too big for all the allied ww2 tanks upto the centurion so wasnt even considered for a tank gun till a lot later. and bear in mind that the sabot 17 could kill any ww2 tank at the time. when the 20pnd was fitted it became the best tank killer till the 105 came out
