Asking it to do a job it was not designed for? Yes. The basic design is over 30 years old and mech war was not a design criteria. Remember the Marine Corps is a kick in the door/roof force and major combat operations after 30 days was supposed to be the Army's role. The Marine Corps often finds itself in these rolls by default or because the Army says they can't do it like Khandahar for example. So the Mairne Corps makes do with what they have. Sort of like turning the 82nd into motorized troops during GW1. How well do you think those 2 1/2 ton trucks would have faired?
How did the AMTRACK perform? From what I have read about Gulf Wars part 1 and 2 not great but OK considering the oppositions. Being more vunerable than Bradleys the Corps had to use differnt tactics and use what little cover ther was better and take full advatge of long range supporting fire. The AMTRACK also has some seriously bad blind spots and dead space for use in urban fighting. I know some were loss to RPGs but not has many as you might think. The AMTRACK has a lot of hull space and hits were not always kills. And most of the time they road with the top hatches open. The top of the AMTRACK has big hatches and the effects of the blast were reduced with these open.
The AMTRACK is on its last legs. The design is old and upgrades have reduced performce in some areas by increasing weight. I think the more recent upgrades include the same power pack as the Bradley. But the added weight of a bigger engine, weapons turrent and a some additional armor have put more strain on the suspension and reduced ground clearance by about half a foot.
Against a first class enemy AMTRACKS would have major problems if used as Infantry combat vehicles. Fortuantely we have not faced that situation
Its replacement the AAAV will be bettr equipped to perform as a Infantry combat vehicle but it wil still be a big target. |
