Subject: RE:1ST ARMORED DIVISION

I was mostly trying to tweak some other posters on this board with that comment. However, Cavalry historically (as in the Armored Cavalry Regiments) has been more elite. In the Cold War 2nd and 11th ACR were deployed on the East German and Czechoslovakian borders and expected to face full Soviet Armies by themselves until the rest of NATO could deploy. A Cavalry Regiment was a much heavier structure than an armor or mech infantry brigade of the time. Each troop had 2 tank and 2 cavalry platoons, a HQ section and a mortar section, for example, giving them combined arms at the company/troop level. The ACR's got much more training dollars and time than the line brigades did and the soldiers were inculcated with the spirit, tradition and history of American Cavalry from day one. With the advent of the new UA structure the TOE superiority of the ACR is more or less gone. And the last remaining ACR, 3rd, probably does not get any more training dollars or time than any other brigade in the Army. Just so you know, I was a tank master gunner and armor/cavalry first sergeant. I spent most of my time in 3rd and 11th ACR's, the remainder with 24th Infantry (now 3rd Infantry). I've never been in a "line unit". I was either in an ACR or 18th Airborne Corps. I have no idea what being armor or cavalry in a normal FORSCOM unit is like.
