For almost 60 years we Americans provided for the defense of  Europe. Unlike the Romans we didn't tax them for that service, we provided it for free, at cost to our taxpayers. NATO,  now in the habit of almost not funding their military, doesn't give a damn that we Americans have improvished ourselves. Actually, except for denigrating commentery and jokes, they don't give a damn about us. Well NATO the free ride is coming to an end.

PS. How's that European Union thing working out?

Better then you think. They have generally more internal  peace than the rest of the planet. Which is to say, they put money  into people not things.

During the Cold War the US was picking up 60% of NATO's cost.

With Europe's budget cuts, America is now financing 80% of the cost. Source: Deutsche Welle.

Deutsche Welle also said it was "unthinkable" that European countries would reduce their social welfare states for defense.

It's time and past time for the US to get out of NATO. Dump 'em now.

They'll have a lot of internal peace under Putin.

How can a man who cannot even get 20,000 men properly organized to invade a radioactive graveyard (Chernobtyl REMEMBER?) possibly threaten Europe? You need to THINK about the total picture and not just the news highlights and scaremongery..

We did not provide for the defense of Europe just to defend Europeans. It was in the national interest of the U.S. to keep western Europe free from the Soviets. That is still the case. It would be very bad for us if western Europe were to fall under Russian domination, so our membership in NATO is still in our national interest. As far as the European Union goes, it would be unreasonable to assume that 400 years of history for the nation-states of Europe could be replaced with a fully united Europe in 40 years. It took almost a hundred years before "the United States" was considered singular and not plural ("the Unites States is" instead of "the United States are").

Europeans are simply too old and arrogant to understand that the world needs also a stick, not only phoney carrots. As long as we will not be willing to go after the enemy, because that's what many people around are (moslems, chinese, russians), well, there will be very little left for hope of survival of our society. We are now so politically correct, that we don't even consider destroying who behead our people and promises to conquer us using our own laws as a crowbar. Europe must wake up and fight. Or it will die. We are at war and must accept it! America has done enough (even mistakes), now we must act as grown ups and take our future in our hands.

Ah, by the way, that thing regarding the European Union is only a joke!!! Don't think about it, it's not even worth the effort!!!!!

Things are working out well in Europe? The European stock market is down due to fear over the Ukraine, investors are not happy so they are putting money in the US market. Record numbers of French Jews are emigrating, they don't seem too be happy living in France. England, France and Denmark are providing most of the young Europeans going to ISIL, that doesn't sound like happy young people. The Germans are whoring themselves for gas lines and the French are doing the same for the sale 4 amphibious ships. Economic problems still haunt the southern European union countries. Least I be impartial, the Turks (a NATO member) now face a future with a resurgent Russia, ISIL, unknowns in Syria and Kurdish aspirations. Their is that Holocaust of the Albanians that comes up as a movie this year. Also, they have managed to piss off both Egypt and Israel at the same time - they must be happy too. Yes, these nations provide social services at the expense of the military but they did it on the premise that the US would be there for them, even if they were never there for us. Well party time is over - time for America to take care of itself.
