There have been rumors for some time about a new, high-speed, stealth replacement for the SR-71 "Blackbird". If the stories are true about "Aurora", she would indeed be formidable; and I would remind you that no SR-71's were ever lost to "enemy" fire. The JSF incorporates many "stealthy" features in its design; as does the F-22 Raptor; however the technology is always an on-going race of measure-countermeasure. Part of the problem is that both the F-22 and F-35's development, procurement and deployment schedules have been so stretched out that we once again run the very real risk of having an aircraft promise much, and not deliver once it finally reaches squadron hands. While the F-22's technology is so sensitive the United States is going to be extremely cautious about any foreign sales, the same cannot be said for the F-35; and with that comes alot of foreign market sales, which in turn will reduce the per-unit price the air force and DoD will end up paying. The downside is that not all of our allies are very scrupulous about keeping trade secrets secret, and the next generation of Russian and Chinese aircraft are being developed with an eye to defeating this aircraft's advantages. The other reality is that a great number of warplanes is the US inventory; and consequently those of our allies who purchased them; are coming to the end of their service lives. The AV-8B Harrier; in example; has turned out to be one of the most dagerous aircraft to fly in peacetime. Do the math, and it's only a matter of time until the accident rates claim the entire force. So, alot of nations that purchased the F-16 (not to mention the aging fleets of F-5 and F-4 out there) need a replacement, and soon. If you hadn't noticed, our Defense Spending has increased in real dollars every year since 2001; although admittedly at a lower real percentage of GDP. A great deal of this money is going to have to be spent on new equipment; and far sooner than was anticipated due to the engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan. You need to pay attention to all of the talk the SecDef has been doing since 2001 on "force transformation". This is long-term investment funding, and; with the exception of UAV's and UGV's; is not going to show appreciable return for another five to eight years. In short...do your homework before you run on about a lack of effective funding. No military ever; not even during a war; gets all the money or goodies it wants. If they're lucky, they'll get enough of what they need.

The important thing is to keep your military force as battle capable as possible. The one thing you must not do during peace time is decrease spending on your military forces because when war comes knocking on your door your gonna wish u spent that extra million on training and that you didn't decommision that mechanised infantry battalion last week. Who remembers the plan from the 1990's for the US army to cut its number of front line combat divisions to 10 divisions??? In light of recent events I think that plan has well and truely gone out the window.
