Isnt a C-130 specter a Much better Cas platform than a A-10 in every form?  How is it the USAF doesnt like cas, but put a cannon on a C-130?

JFKY    NO, the AC-130 is NOT   4/22/2015 9:52:03 AM
a better CAS platform than the A-10 in every form.....The A-10 can operate in a (relatively) hi threat air defense environment, unlike the AC-130.  Sure as long as you are talking about malleting a bunch of dudes with AK-47's, RPK's & RPG-7's then yes they are equivalent....but as soon as the opposition has ManPADS, Shilka's, 37mm, 57mm, 85mm AAA & the like the AC-130 disappears from the scene, either because it must be removed from theatre or because it is destroyed.....

I take no position on the A-10 v. the F-16/35....I see both sides of that...Pro A-10: it is a better dedicated CAS platform....Con A-10: it IS a dedicated CAS platform & in tight budget times a multi-role platform is preferable to a dedicated platform.

If we start by removing the enemy of America and get our bucks for America things will get much better.

The A-10 is not designed to shoot down fighters, does not mean it hasn't shot a few down.  It is a great aircraft and does it's job far better then any other plane in this mission.

When I was assigned to Field Training as a trainer manager I had the fun of playing with the trainer, it was impressive from the gun to the flight control and The rear horizontal flaps.  I am not a pilot, merely a senior NCO, as in an E-8.  Loved that bird.  Saddens me to see all this happens.

We did the same to the US Army over their Caribou.  I was in Vietman at that time and saw all this go down, saddened me.

HR    F-18 and Harrier   4/22/2015 11:00:31 AM
Neither the F-18 and Harrier are as good in CAS as the A-10. Is not just the gun.

For  the replacement of A-10; the  basic  things must  be  noticed   CAS; comanded operated  by  ground  troops. So attention  must  be paid development of  VTOL Jets .

The A-10 is there. Give it to the ANG and let them pay and play.

The day 1 fighting will be to gain air superiority which is what is necessary for even the A-10 to operate. Believe me the A-10 cannot survive Sukhois. You need those Eagles and Falcons as top cover whatever CAS is involved. .

Cannoneer No. 4    If the Army Wants Them   4/25/2015 12:19:35 AM
Why Can't the Air Force let Army Aviation have them?  Transfer the entire A-10 community to Army Aviation.  Logistics, ordnance, maintenance, and joint training.  As the Air Force-trained crews retire, replace them with Army Warrant Officer pilots and Army/joint-trained ground crews.    The Air Force fighter generals would let American infantry die before they would allow their empires to shrink, even though the F-35 and F-22 are probably the last manned air-to-air combat platforms.  Close Air Support will likely be one of the last missions human pilots lose to automation because human judgement and situational awareness will remain hard to replicate remotely for decades

HeavyD    Pathetic Losers   4/25/2015 2:03:12 AM
How many enemy aircraft has the USAF shot down VS how many CAS missions have been flown? What is the ratio? 500-1? 1000-1? Pathetic losers. On this particular issue, those are the kindest words that brass who try to convince the 'customers' that zoom-and-boom is an equal if not superior capability than low and slow. In a dedicated airframe. With pilots dedicated to the CAS mission.
