Subject: Females in Combat
Dan Masterson (Publisher StrategyPage.com)    7/2/2001 2:29:21 PM
The US and many other foreign countries now have females in most, if not all, combat roles. But the debate rages on, as to whether this is a good thing. Let us know your opinion.

evlstu    Question to ALL about women in combat   7/2/2001 2:41:54 PM
Are you ready to accept your wife, daughter, girlfreind, sister, mother, aunt or niece winding up in a POW camp or coming home in a bodybag ? I'm not nor am willing to put the lives of military men AND women, the seucrity of our country, or the security of our allies (except france - cause they don't count for much) at risk just to make a few loadmouth, leftwing, liberals happy as they persue their own social agenda.

In the US, I would say that there is no real need for women to be infantry, armor, or cavalry. But, for the sake of discussion, I would say that there are many men not suitable for frontline fighting, and even greater percentage of women would not be. I have no doubt that there are women who would make exceptional frontline fighters, my main worry would be their male counter-part. Issues of hygiene, body modesty, respect, mutal sexual attraction, sexual harrsement, and rape have to be taken into consideration. Laws and codes of conduct printed in a book and muttered in a classroom wouldn't be enough of a safeguard alone. The only way I can see it working, in the US military at least, if both genders were highly self-disciplined units such as the SEALS and Special Forces. Which, of course, is no guarantee that bad things wouldn't happen. In general, I think that any lady that could make it as a front line fighter could make it in a elite unit.

OK Big Boys, probaly just sitting around drinking beer and talking about sex you won't get unless you are by yourself!(haha, just joking) I am still serving and have served proudly for 21 years.I just returned from Afghanistan and thou I have a size 2 combat boot I had no problem placing in where it belonged. Just pray for all our troops! Male or female, they are all soldiers! I do agree we all have separate roles and I love being a woman but the truth be known no man could have done my job over there the way I successfully retrieved our soldiers bodies to return home because a size smaller boot is less apt to hit a landmine. We should not be fighting amongst ourselves. I appreciate all soldiers and their unique place in the military. Have a great day and God I LOVE AMERICA and running water.

You just have to be able to carry any man on your squad out of combat.. If you cannto do that.. then you shouldnt be there.

I don't think women should be encouraged to be in combat. Sure enough you'll have those die hard, crazy ladies out there who want to join the military but I think as a general rule - we should not encourage women to actually go out there and combat in the a real battle. Maybe the ladies could do the cooking/washing/cleaning at the military buildings but we shouldn't encourage them to go out and fight. Women are too precious/too caring/loving to be engaged in such barbaric activities. War and battles are for men.

BrotherMan I don't think anyone should be encouraged to engage in combat,it's not very pleasant at all from the sounds of it. As far as women in combat, they need to be able to meet the same physical requirements as men for the role the fill. Since women have a lighter build than men in general, the heavy duty roles such as infantry, would not see women serving in anything like the same proportion as men, and nor should they. The other issue is that sports therapists have noticed women are far more prone to sports injuries than men, this translates into higher casualty rates amongst women than men, even when noone is shooting at them. Finally there is the issue of 'keeping your hands to yourself'. This is probably best solved by segregating units at least up to the company level, if not to the batallion level. This would keep a lot of the casual horseplay from occurring continuously by minimising day to day contact with members of the opposite sex within the soldiers own unit. Sexual harrasment, horniness and everything that goes with it are distractions that soldiers can do without, particularly in combat. Off duty, of course the rules could be relaxed. That's my opinion anyway.

I may be a bit late with this posting, but I just found it. The notion of females in a volunteer army from a democratic country should be a non issue. If they can vote, they can fight. It's up to them. Want to keep them at home and feed the kids? Get out of the 19th century! As to their abilities in the field, check your recent history; Russian women soldiers vs German infantry...the germans were terrified because of the brutality of the women! The Russian female pilots (something like 30% casualties) called 'night witches' by the germans. Several female fighter pilots became aces. As to being able to carry any man in your squad, what crap! Usual practice is 2 guys dragging by the webbing, usually because its faster and presents less of a target. A fireman's carry may look good in a photo, but under fire? Get real. I served in an artillery unit with male and female soldiers; the women weren't on the gun line but operated trucks and the comms gear (their higher pitched voices are easier to hear over FM sets). Any two of those women could have dragged me out a fight. Hell, my own CO was a woman, 5'2" if she was an inch, probably 50kg soaking wet, but I've seen her fire an M60 from the shoulder, aimed and unsupported, at a target 200m away and hit it. Hats off the the girls, I say. I'll fight beside 'em any time. (I also saw a group of female drivers doing their SMG practice...the number of women who aim for the groin with automatics is disturbing!)

I have to agree with PiersM. My grandfather (US 3rd Armor Spearhead Division) told stories of how women were some of the most brutal fighters in the French underground in WW2 against the Nazis. Unarmed, they would overpower German soldiers taking in the sights of occupied France, mercilessly stomp them to death, and give their German weapons to the French resistance. He was of the opinion that women didn't need to fight because they LACK mercy. I'm undecided. I'm not exactly sure how this would play as using women in a full combat role, but if women kept at home don't know how to fight, they're vitually useless in homeland defense, and reduced to fodder in a resistance.
