maruben    More than an airfield what RUSSIA wants.   11/14/2008 4:41:11 PM
On Russian request, Iceland could veto Georgia and Ukraine joining the NATO.

Getting that base would be a sweet deal for the russians. But it has very little chance of happening unfortunately.

Germany and France will do that for us. No need to get Iceland involved in something like that.

Nato is a joke. The US and Britain are the only two countries that matter.

Island government could use some coaching from Cuba and Fidel Castro, perhaps.

How far would Iceland go to thumb its nose at NATO/EU?  Offer the airbase or port access to non-western militaries other than Russia?  Iceland is being pretty petty.

Might as well kick the Icelanders' snouts then bluntly tell them ... 'You ungreatful piss-weeds, STFU.'

Perhaps blockade Iceland, then bomb their infrastructures, then just wait around for several winters until that island becomes uninhabited.

Unfortunately for Iceland access to an air base is the only chip she has left to play.  Her economy is on the brink of implosion, she has no military, and the dramatic shift of power after the end of Cold War has rendered her almost completely irrelevant.  I doubt the Icelanders are really serious about allowing thousands of Russians to crawl all over their island for God knows how long (once they're there they are hard to get rid of), but I'm sure this is a move to place the United States and Western Europe on notice that Iceland is suffering and getting desperate.  Her offer to our former and sometime current enemy may seem ungrateful considering how NATO has protected and enriched Iceland, but it's hard to be grateful when you're about to go under.

How about the US Government come up with another big bailout package, in order to infuse loads of cash into the ailing Icelander economy?  In return, have Iceland become the 51st state of the US and thereafter, they have to salute to the Stars & Stripes.

So, backup your assertion, what does NATO do well?

Oh yeah, I see a fair few British landrovers with ISAF written on them.

But what does NATO do well?

I'd say "allow dozens of nations to work together", with everything that it includes.
I like knowing american planes support french troops, french planes supporting dutch troop, etc.
I think NATO did a pretty goo job on that part.
I could also talk about Kosovo where NATO forces stoped Milosevic from finishing his ethnic cleansing, I think NATO did that well (also the US did not need NATO).

I don't get your point. If its a question of how the war is fought in a-stan, it's not really Nato's fault

I don't get what is so wrong with Iceland having military ties to both NATO and Russia. Greece has military ties to Russia, despite being a NATO member. Why not follow down that path, if the Russians are up for it?
