Subject: Little known weird facts.
Thomas    6/28/2004 9:41:32 AM
I'll try and start a thread here of apparently trivia on leaders (we can move on to tank, if there is any interest).

They might be of little consequence: Kemal Atatürk had blue eyes.

They might make your skin crawl: Reinhardt Heydrich had a high pitched, squeaky voice.

They might add a new side to your knowledge: President William Howard Taft was (beside being the fattest president of the USA) honourable president of the Rebild society - the Danish-American friendship society - George Bush sn. iis one know.

They may be of periphial importance: General DeMeza suffered from urin incontinence (he lost in 1864 2 Slesvian War).

Your input.

I seem to recall hearing that Hitler had a weird sexual relationship with his neice and that she committed suicide because of it. Anyone confirm this?

German troops in WWI were easily detected by Franco/Brits in trenches due to the sound and smell of their excessive gass passing caused by the eating of so much kraut and sausage. German learship became aware of this after the first year of trench warfare and began changes to a milder German troop ration.

Audie Murphy was not killed by a guy with a baseball bat. He was killed in a plane crash in 1971 in Virginia: Per Wikipedia -"While on a business trip on May 28, 1971, (Memorial Day Weekend) he was killed at the age of 46. His private plane was flying in fog and rain. It crashed on the side of Brush Mountain near Catawba, Virginia, some twenty miles west of Roanoke, Virginia. Five others including the pilot were also killed."

longrifle    RE:Alvin York/Sam Woodfill   12/1/2005 12:23:12 PM
Most people are familiar with the exploits of Alvin York. What many people don't know is that a soldier named Sam Woodfill was awarded the Medal of Honor for a very similar circumstance that also happened in October of 1918. The similarities are amazing, both incidents basically involved one man with a bolt action rifle against numerous machine gun emplacments. In each case the fight was won by skillfull use of precision marksmanship and ground, not volume of fire or maneuver, exept when moving to aquire targets.

The sniper with the highest confirmed kill count in Vietnam was U.S. Army SFC Bert Waldron. 109 confirmed kills while serving with the 9th Infantry Divisio in the Mekong Delta area. To make it more interesting, Waldron was only employed as a sniper for about 6 months or so. The 9th Division started training snipers in the fall of 1968 and started to withdraw from Vietnam in the summer of 1969. In fairness to the better known Marine Corps snipers though, Waldron probably doesn't have all the "probables" that men like Hath and Mawhinney are acknowleged as having. Their probables were said to exceed their confirmed by a ratio of 2-3 to 1.

giblets    RE:Little known weird facts - Stalins withered arm   1/9/2006 5:20:49 AM
>>>Another: Roosewelt never allowed himself to be photographed from above, or to have other leaders standing beside him, they were always asked to sit, his wheelchair was never shown in a photo. When he died, some people were surprised to know he had polio<<< Stalin also had polio of one of his arms ( I htink it was polio), so had a withered arm, if you note, not a single picture exists of him with both arms straight at his side. There is a story that he commissioned three artists to paint him, the first painted him with no blemishes at all, both arms perfectly straight, he was sent off to the Gulag straight away. The second, hearing this, panicked and painted him warts and all, again straight to the gulag. The third painted him riding a horse from an angle holding the reigns in one hand, and was kept on.

According the History Channel's Conquerors series Stalin wanted to ride a white horse at the Victory Parade held in Red Square after the German surrender. However during a practice ride he almost fell off and Zhukov ended up riding the white horse.

Longfellow made a translation of the Danish Royal Anthem. You know the good one: "Bash the head in on the Swedes". Before SYSOP reacts: It really says so in the original.

Amorphous Blob    RE:Little known weird facts.   6/12/2006 5:30:31 PM
I read a book in High School, "Best, Worst, and Most Unusual", in which they mentioned a Union general during the US Civil War who would have episodes where he believed he was a bird and would sit in his tent making cheeping noises, accepting only birdseed for food. Sorry, I can't remember his name. (The same book mentioned the worst suicide - a guy decided to self-immolate on top of a cliff overlooking the sea in Italy, but then reconsidered after a short while. However, rolling around on the ground in an attempt to put the flames out, he rolled over the cliff. See, High School wasn't a complete waste of time for me.) Hitler's face can be seen in a photograph of a large crowd in Vienna during a rally at the start of WWI. Also, I believe that I remember reading that both Hitler and Stalin were "down and out" (ie, bums) in Vienna for a few months at the same time before WWI. Too weird if their paths ever crossed. I don't think that Hitler had any kind of physical relationship w/ his niece, but she did probably commit suicide because of him. Kinda weird that Napoleon was a Corsican, Hitler an Austrian, and Stalin a Georgian, any they all grew up to run their uber-countries. "German troops in WWI were easily detected by Franco/Brits in trenches due to the sound and smell of their excessive gass passing caused by the eating of so much kraut and sausage. German learship became aware of this after the first year of trench warfare and began changes to a milder German troop ration." -- I find this kind of hard to believe... how often were the trenches within 50m of each other (f@rt-hearing range), in which case you'd know they were there anyway.

Spent Case    AB   6/12/2006 6:32:21 PM
I just so happen to have the 2 edition compendium of that book. It can keep me amused for hours... >>Most Unusual General: General Richard S. Ewell, who fought gallantly for the Confederacy at Winchester and Gettysburg, sometimes hallucinated that he was a bird. For hours at a time he would sit in his tent softly chriping to himself, and at mealtimes he would accept only sunflower seeds or a few grains of wheat.<< The Best, Worst & Most Unusual Bruce Felton & Mark Fowler Galahad Books ISBN: 0-88365-861-5 Best Heckler is one of my favorites.
