Subject: Little known weird facts.
Thomas    6/28/2004 9:41:32 AM
I'll try and start a thread here of apparently trivia on leaders (we can move on to tank, if there is any interest).

They might be of little consequence: Kemal Atatürk had blue eyes.

They might make your skin crawl: Reinhardt Heydrich had a high pitched, squeaky voice.

They might add a new side to your knowledge: President William Howard Taft was (beside being the fattest president of the USA) honourable president of the Rebild society - the Danish-American friendship society - George Bush sn. iis one know.

They may be of periphial importance: General DeMeza suffered from urin incontinence (he lost in 1864 2 Slesvian War).

Your input.

Reincarnation might be kinda comforting if you're a general, means you can send these boys off to die, and be comforted that they'll be reborn. As opposed to sending them off to die, and having to remember them.

The first Allied troops who arrived to Paris after the German ocupation in WWII were...Spanish. Many Spaniards, supporters of the defeated Republic, fleed to France by the end of the Spanish Civil War. After a period in refugee camps and by the time of the German invasion of France, those exilees joined the ranks of the French Resistance or the French forces in the North of Africa. The last, who were put under the command of General Leclerc, were involved in the operations in Normandy and finally were the first in arrive to Paris. Tercio

Jastayme wrote: "Actually that's a pretty well known fact-if you've watched the movie" Considering the age of the movie and constant anti-warrior trend of Western society I suspect that the number of folks today in the US who have seen "Patton" is pretty low. It may be common on these boards to watch that movie, but we are not representative of our societies. I would say this is a little known weird fact since most Americans knowledge of Patton will be limited to the fact that he was a general and he was called "Old Blood and Guts".

The film was shown a few times in the last couple of years on german cable channels. must be our warrior spirit ;)

Most folks thought he carried pearl handled revolvers; they were ivory. Or was it the other way around? Patton was born into a well-off family with military hitory and was quite a character; could probably have a discussion thread just on him huh...

Oliver Hazard Perry, of the "Don't Give Up The Ship!" fame, was deathly afraid of cows! It is called Bovinephobia.

James Joyce of "Ulyssus" fame spoke and read Danish very well. He wanted to read Ibsen in the original language, which is Dansih, in spite of Ibsen being a Norwegean.

According to one story, Marshal Blucher believed he was pregnant with an elephant, and the father was one of Napoleon's grenadiers.

Alexander Fleming saved Winston Churchill from drowning when they were both young boys. Winston's dad, Randolph Churchill, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, gave Alexander Fleming (a poor Scottish farmboy the money to go to medical school) Alexander Fleming saved Winston Churchill's life a second time in 1941 when Churchill was inspecting the British troops in North Africa and had gotten pneumonia. Alexander Fleming showed up with his new wonder drug, Penicillin.

Hans Christian Andersen (200th birthday 2. april 2005) had very large feet and stopped writing after the Danish defeat in 1865.
