Subject: Little known weird facts.
Thomas    6/28/2004 9:41:32 AM
I'll try and start a thread here of apparently trivia on leaders (we can move on to tank, if there is any interest).

They might be of little consequence: Kemal Atatürk had blue eyes.

They might make your skin crawl: Reinhardt Heydrich had a high pitched, squeaky voice.

They might add a new side to your knowledge: President William Howard Taft was (beside being the fattest president of the USA) honourable president of the Rebild society - the Danish-American friendship society - George Bush sn. iis one know.

They may be of periphial importance: General DeMeza suffered from urin incontinence (he lost in 1864 2 Slesvian War).

Your input.

Patton also participated in the 1912 Olympics and was the only fencer to beat the French champion. He was also known to have a high-pitched voice which, thankfully George Scott didn't try to emulate in the 70's movie concerning the great general.

He also shot in the pistol competition in the Olympics and lost when it was ruled that one of his rounds had missed the target. Given that he was a very accurate pistol marksman it seems likely that he may well have shot through an already existing hole in the target rather than missing. Had that been the case, he would have won the Gold.

Caesar's lucky warhorse had hooves that resembled toes. Napoleon had several of his favourite mounts shot out from under him in battle. The famous painting of the Crossing of St. Bernard by David with him mounted on a giant warhorse, his finger pointing onward (c'mon you guys know what I'm talking about) was a fabrication: Napoleon rode mules before he became emperor because he was too short to get on a proper charger. You guys pbly know this one, but the war steed ridden by the knights of the later middle ages (before the use of gunpowder, where plate armour had reached its height) were incapable of charging. Years of breeding for size and load left them only able to carry on at a trot at best in battle.

After all his military exploits and honors Audie Murphy eventually died by being beaten to death by a baseball bat when he tried to prevent a man from abusing a dog.

My father is 87 years old and a life long diehard Democrat. About two years ago we were watching a television documentary about FDR and he was shocked to learn that FDR was an invalid. One could never keep something like that a secret today, not with the modern journalists.

I'm pretty positive he died in the early 70's when he was involved in a light plane crash ..... or something like that.

What with the US naming equipment after military figureheads, how come we never had a "Murphy" tank? Is the Army afraid that "Murphy's Law" would be all over it, and anything that could go wrong with it would?.

Murphy had an inadequate number of stars on his uniform to have a tank named after him. sides he was in the infantry.

Hey, if we can name an air defense vehicle for Sgt York we can certainly name a weapons system for Lt. Murphy.

Really Small, with a big gun? designed to work with infantry? Sounds like a M8 (or XM-8 if your care, I dont) And especially since its already been rejected!

"In politics, an absurdity is not an impediment." - Napolean I guess Bush is exhibit #1 in that case. And several other politicians could other exhibits.

As I recall, the Sgt. York DIVAD was cancelled in the early '80's before entering production. I also seem to recall that it was the first major weapons system to be named for a noncom, hence, it's inevitable cancellation.

Patton believed in reincarnation and believed that he personally had fought for Carthage in a past life. --------------------------------------------------- Actually that's a pretty well known fact-if you've watched the movie
