Subject: Little known weird facts.
Thomas    6/28/2004 9:41:32 AM
I'll try and start a thread here of apparently trivia on leaders (we can move on to tank, if there is any interest). They might be of little consequence: Kemal Atatürk had blue eyes. They might make your skin crawl: Reinhardt Heydrich had a high pitched, squeaky voice. They might add a new side to your knowledge: President William Howard Taft was (beside being the fattest president of the USA) honourable president of the Rebild society - the Danish-American friendship society - George Bush sn. iis one know. They may be of periphial importance: General DeMeza suffered from urin incontinence (he lost in 1864 2 Slesvian War). Your input.

Thanks for filling me in - a person of culture should know him: What films did he play in?

Thomas, Try these websites for starters: link link Audie Murphy is pretty much a legend in the US military. He wrote his autobiography, "To Hell and Back", which was made into a movie with him playing himself. He starred in 44 movies total. He was wounded three times, once in Italy and twice in France, including during the fight where he won the Medal of Honor. He turned down his first offer of a battlefield commission, but later was promoted and allowed to retain command of his platoon. He served in the 1st Bn, 15th Infantry Regiment, assigned to 3rd Infantry Division and participated in campaigns in North Africa, Italy and France. He also suffered from malaria contracted in North Africa. When his company went into Italy his commander tried to make him a company runner (carrying orders, etc.) to protect him, he was so small and slight. He snuck off and went on patrol anyhow, winning a bronze star in the process. His commander put him in a platoon after that. The man was a true warrior in the American tradition. When his country needed him, he fought, when it no longer needed him, he returned to his own life.

The man was a roughneck bar fighter, then a religious pacifist, then a Medal of Honor winner without getting a scratch on him. Then a pacifist again, then changed once more to support the US entry into WW2. link

...crying shame the Army "honored" his memory by naming an ill-fated AA tank after him....

US Grant's favorite breakfast was sliced cucumber covered in vinegar. And any meat served him had to be almost burnt because he grew nauseated at the sight of blood from rare beef. Dan Sickles, a New York politician who became a general in the Union Army, lost a leg at Gettysburg. The leg was kept at the Army's Pathology Labs at what is now Walter Reed Hospital. He used to go visit his leg every year. Johnny Clem, the Drummer Boy of Shiloh, was a 10 year old drummer at teh Battle of Shiloh. He received a commission in 1871 and retired in 1916 as a major general.
