Subject: RE:Ship Names- Heads of State, States/Counties, Cities and the alphabet
AMTP10E    4/10/2004 4:21:31 AM
In Australia, we've actually got a DI(N) ADMIN that lays out the naming convention for our ships. HMAS Australia is reserved for major warships (Cruiser or Aircraft Carrier). Since we currently have neither, there's no ship named Australia at the moment. Frigates and destroyers get major city names or names of previous warships (Sydney, Melbourne, Arunta, Anzac etc...) Amphibs get the name of previous amphibs, troop carriers, or amphibious landings (Tobruk, Manoora, Kanimbla, Jervis Bay, Balikpapan, etc...) Submaries now are named after famous naval personnel (usually Admirals and Captains but HMAS Sheean is named after Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean). Pretty much every thing else is named after regional towns. I only wish they brought back the old V class names back (Vampire, Vengence, Vendetta, Victory...)
