Subject: Greatest Military Leader Of All Time
Ad    11/30/2003 11:19:39 AM
This counts for everyone, from Hannibal to Paton. My personal choice would be Wellington, as the only defeat was suffered in the siege of Seringapatam in 1799 when he was a 29 year old colonel of the 33rd. He successfully defeated all of Napoleans Marshells and the little Corsican himself. However, if you disagree post your choice and your reasons. Cheers

Napoléon without a doubt. Wellington was afraid of Napoleon. He even state the latter is the greatest general of all time. Also Wellington didn't win Waterloo it was the Germanic people who does; counting as 75% of the total forces. The contingent consist of 3 countries: the British, Germany and Netherlands. Each formed 1/3 but the two latter represent the bigger third while Wellington the smaller. Germany alone could have won this battle but the British couldn't without Germany. check this links link link link link link link link link

"Napoléon without a doubt." he pales into insignificance compared to Subodai or Genghis Khan.

"he pales into insignificance compared to Subodai or Genghis Khan." What are u saying? Did you realised that by the way you answer you totally lack any respect and value to this GREAT person. Napoleon employ the best tactic ever on the battlefield. All around the world the leaders study his tactics and they soon copy them. Napoleon not only he was a millitary Genius but also an amazing politician and excellent manager to integrate things such as Code of law and meter systems among others. Few if not none was able to master all of this in the history of human kind.

"What are u saying? Did you realised that by the way you answer you totally lack any respect and value to this GREAT person." I know exactly what I'm saying. I'm not according the same degree of respect and value that you ascribe - that's the difference. In terms of real estate napoleon was nowhere near as collective as subodai, as far as managing and co-ordinating multiple large armies thousands of kilometeres apart - as part of a co-ordinated concurrent military process to achieve an objective - Napoleon never achieved that, in fact it was not really achieved at such a level by any other military commander until ww2. subodai was instrumental in establishing officer rank by meritocracy - some 400 years before napoleon was born, he defined the issue of fire and movement in its classical sense. - napoleon didn't. Napoleon never fielded armies against similar odds. he is one of the greatest european military leaders - but he's not the greatest overall IMHO.

JIMF    RE:Greatest Military Leader Of All Time-Question?   5/8/2005 6:08:15 PM
Is anyone familiar with the late 18th century Russian General Suvorov. I've never seen any books in English about him. Tolstoy refers to him in War and Peace, and the Russians had (have) a medal called the "Order of Suvorov". I've heard him referred to as the Russian Napoleon. Any information would be appreciated.

There is an excellent book about Suvarov. "Eagle Over the Alps" by Christopher Duffy from the Emperor's Press. It is about Suvarov's campaigns in Italy and Switzerland at 1799. Sadly for wargamers, Napoleon was at Egypt in that time. They could never face each other in the battlefield.

Pars    Greatest Military Leader Duo Of All Time; Subudai-Jebe Noyan   5/12/2005 6:34:57 PM
Subudai is really one of the unknown geniusses of military history. He was the most talented and trusted general of Genghis Khan. Unlike many of the other Mongol generals he was not from the nobility. One of his talents was his extraordinary memory. He could draw a mapof everywhere he has traveled. That is why he always led the vanguard or expedionary armies. He was especially dangereous when he had shared command with Jebe Noyan (Noyan means noble). They were the best commander pair in the history. Subudai had extraordinary battlefield skills. And Jebe Noyan had the agressiveness and killing insticts. Also being good friends helped. I think no general from nobility other than Jebe wanted to work with Subudai. They served together from China to Russia. Subudai was the first Mogol commander who appreciated Chinese fire power. Maybe one day I can write more detailly about them.

"Subudai is really one of the unknown geniusses of military history." Schwarzkopff referred to Subodai as a "21st Century General/Theatre Commander stuck in the 12th Century" - (sic)

Pars    Schwatzkoph and Stephen the Great: the underrated leaders.   5/12/2005 7:09:34 PM
Schwarzkopff was also one of the underrated commanders. There was nearly 20 different nations of that alliance. Numereous things could have gone wrong. He did a first class job. But he will be seldomly remembered in the future. Like another greatest military leader of all time. Stephen the great. He was the King of Moldovia. He fought against the strongest military powers of his age Ottoman, Poland, Hungary, Crimea and against some of the best miltary leaders of his age Mehmed II and Mathias Corvinus and he did not lose a single cm of Moldovia. And Moldovia was a small country with a small militia army But if anyone puts him to rightly deserved top 20 greatest military leaders list 99% of the readers will say "who is Stephen the Great; I never heard of him."
