Subject: What Does Morale Tell You
BadNews    2/20/2007 3:43:58 PM
Every Marine that I have spoken with that has been to Iraq recently has said basically the same thing. "We're doing much better there than what you hear about on TV or read in the papers" When that great Genie of misinformation Geraldo interviewed troops in Iraq the other day, specifically from the 82nd Airborne and asked what they thought of the Democrats congressional tactics, the jr troopers said it was nothing more than a "aggravation" the officers, two Col's one from the the 82nd, one from the 10th Mtn gave the usual "We go where we're told" company line but the look on their faces struck me as it seemed they were amused that the question was even asked. For the most part few returning troops have said anything to the contray of what I just stated. So the question is, if the moral is so good, and the Us Army and Marines have exceeded re-enlistment goals in 2006 (A real tell tale sign) Where is the defeatest line of thought coming from,

Im not sure where all the negativity comes from, but personaly I belive people to be "negative thinkers," a person can be optimistic but quite often groups of people tend to be ignorant, very nieve.  I believe Yimmy is right, bad news sells just as horror movies with no plot sell.  Bad news stilmulates a more powerfull emotional response than good does.  It sucks too because the media will lose the war, just as in nam i believe.  Lessons were learned in nam, that we need to stand behind our troops, but propaganda will be the only thing that will lose the war.
I also think it may be a cause of competition between the polotitians.  Have you EVER heard an opposing polotician say, "the president is doing the right thing, I have full confidence in his abilities." never, they dont win elections by agreeing with their opponent, they win by opposing, then counter with a "better way."  However there is rarly a better way, for people only talk after the fact.  They say Bush messed up after they have more info, but at the time the president made that particular choice, he didnt have the same info that the critics do because they do extra research to find flaws, then when the act the president chose shows some sort of effect, then they talk.
Just my two cents.
What do ya'll think?

What I Think?
1) Mistakes were definately made, but mistakes are always made in War, in Policy precluding War whatever

2) I still very much beleive it was the right thing to do,

3) Yes Bad News sells papers, no pun intended (BTW: That's not how I got the nickname)

Badnews,
It went well.  Great info.  Due to my current situation, (basketball season) I could only go up on a sunday, and this particular day the Capt. and Sgt. were headed out of town so maybe that is why I was not particularly to imprest with him.  You told me to watch how the Capt. carries himself, and I didnt believe him to be all that great, maybe its because they were gettting ready to leave but, he wasnt high and tight, he wasnt that impressive in my standards.  My voice was still gone at the time too, so we couldnt talk much, (they showed me how to talk drill sgt style, sitten back on your larynx and all.)  However I called him today and spoke with him for 30 mins or so and that was great, being that I could speak and ask questions, learned alot.  I just got the book, "One Bullet Away, the making of a Marine Officer."  Its great so far, I think that book will help me out alot,  I really want a challenge, a huge challenge and want to be hands on, I am going to finish college for sure, but still debating enlisted vs officer.

That is indeed a great read!
Anyway, which ever way you choose to go, it's just like school, it's what you make it, and incidently, it's the NCO's that run the corps, the post service opportunities for a commissioned officer are awesome, besides, try for officer selection first the enlisted option will always be there.

I knew a guy that was an Army Major in Vietnam, in the 70's he enlisted in the USMC asked him why once, he said simply, because I am back on active duty where I belong

Yeah I was reading that, I just started reading One Bullet Away and its the gunnies that run OCS.  I guess its the Corps form of checks and balances??  To me it makes sense though, and that is why I am having a hell of a time making a desicion.  I really believe that I would lead better as a sgt., being closer to the men, espirt de corps, its about the men and I like doing.  I like working hard, and I really want to be part of something great, thats why I want to join the Corps.  Well I have a ways to go before I either enlist or get my commision, few more years of school to mature and asses the situation, pros, and cons.  In the end though what will be right for me is what is in my heart, like that Army Major that enlisted in the Corps, he did it because its where is heart lay.
