Subject: Annemette Hommel freed of all charges
Thomas    7/6/2006 3:28:17 PM
Cpt. Annemette Hommel and 4 military police was convicted of torture in the connection with interrogation of POW in Iraq. Not one of the accused were however sentenced to either prison or fine. The Defence forces high command was critisised for lack of guidelines. This sentence was one Capt. Hommel could not accept, as her civilian job as an officer in the foreign office Human Rights Bureau would be terminated. She and the other thus appealed the sentence in the district court to the regional court, where she and the others were cleared of all charges. The presiding judge critisised the army, for not providing guidelines in spite of her repeated requests. Her commanding officer LtCol Flach has not been charged. Comment: This will have repercussions in the army. Politicians have smelled blood - and rightly so - and are talking about a serious derfect in leadership incompatible with Danish engagement abroad in zones of war and unrest.
