The rifles the Marine snipers use are not much longer or heavier than the M16A2 the spotter often carry. The day ot two of shooting I did with it showed little in the way of "awkwardness" between it & the M16A2. I'd think trying to get at a pistol in the holster would be more awkward than taking a snap shot with the rifle. In any case the majority of the training given the Scout/Snipers was in things that would avoid suprise. Choosing positions, routes, camoflage, and outhinking the enemy was the bulk of it. This is why I wonder if the 'snipers' killed were even on a mission. Unless they were practicing tactics grossly different from those of 1995 I am unclear on what they were doing together, unless not on a sniper mission.

yeah well, if they were all killed in close proximity by a sheep hearder with an AK , thats saying something. no seconday weapons sufficient. I think the swedes have got the right idea with issue of a MP5 for each member, if that is what they do.

"The earliest use I recall of selfloading rifles for snipers were the Isralis, back in the mid to late 1970s. Anyone know of earlier examples? " I dont know squat about the Marines, but I do know the scoped M-14 (I'm not sure exactly it officially became the M-21) was used by the US Amry's 9th ID in Vietnam.

The US Army in WWII used accurized and scoped M1 garands as sniper rifles in addition to 1903A3 Springfields
