With a folding  deck Litoral Combat Ships  even  submarines  can  be  developed to be  used  landing platform  for STVL jets.

1. you are NOT allowed to talk about the "LCS" it brings out the Trolls. 2. To actually deploy, to be distinguished from having an aircraft land on a vessel, an aircraft requires quite bit of volume, for fuel, parts, storage, maintenance & the like. LCS & Submarines lack that volume, & hence would be rather inefficient platforms for aviation.

The Japanese operated aircraft carrying submarines in WWII.

At 5,000 tonnes these sound more like the APD fast transport ships converted from old destroyers, as used in WWII and Vietnam by America.

That would be the I-400 class. Displacement of 6,560 long tons (6,670 t). I watched a documentary on the History channel last night that featured this class. The US Nave used them for target practice after the war..

Maybe someone here's a shipwright and can help me with the comparison.

A 5000ton ship, or large boat really, is being compared to a 35,000 ton fully founded ship?
How could they possibly be related? How could one possibly be derived from the other? Makes no sense to me, simply no way a ship 1/7th the size could in any way shape to form be a derivative of a far larger vessel. In either form or function.... I'd love to be told I'm wrong and shown how :/

Japanese submarines used as AC carriers.
Think they had a catapult that could launch 3 Zeros that were stored in a hanger, looked like a second hull on top of the main one. Not sure how operational these were, nor how they were supposed to recover and reload the birds....
I know current big subs that the US employ launch small recon UAV's out of the torpedo/missile tubes, again, not sure of the reload procedure, if theres one at all.
But yes, if you could make it work then it'd be a lovely thing to have a carrier that can disappear after launching its birds. Maybe in half a century or so we'll be there. Don't think many of us will be around to see it happening.

No mention of LCS here please. It does bring out the trolls. We should make it an unofficial rule. Like comparing someone to hitler in a debate is an automatic loss, mentioning LCS in a post is an automatic end of thread. Mods should enforce this rule asap. Do i have a second?

Concur with the three letters that shall not be spoken.. I'm even wondering if I can remove the letters from my posts and still be somewhat understandable (not that my typical standard of writing.. or use of the English language is all that spectacular)

Anyhow.. I had the same question as Nate.. how can a 5,000 ton ship.. in any way compare to 35,000 ton ship..

The only thing that came to mind was the Chinese are thinking much shorter halls than the U.S. Navy... not sure how much of the 35,000 ton ship is "used up" in long duration.. long distance missions..  That said.. it still doesn't seem to work out...

err should be "hauls" not "halls" (ah my brain and typing don't mix well).. I was referring to sailing distance.. rather than the average height and width of a Chinese sailor

It would be easy, with  STOVL aircraft. Thye would only be able to use Liight loads if taking off vertically.

I woudl build a large sub with a sealable housing enclosure.

As with the Japanese sea planes, it would have to be a calm sea for that to work.
