HR    Surprised no one has commented yet.   12/8/2014 12:01:11 PM
These are power projection type ships. Very reliable. We know from the uses we give them how versatile and capable they can be. I certainly feel better with them not having them. Hopefully they will not reverse this decision.

1. You have done nothing, HR.
2. Power projection?: LHD type, mostly geared to company sized operations max. op. cap. (450-900 marines)  battalion but only for short cross Med operations. Combat radius, about 7.000 km. Spaces for 16 helicopters (NH-90 class or lighter)  and for four medium LCMs (barge lighters) or two rather small air cushion lighters. Top speed about 35 m/h. Self defense capacity=ZERO.
3. France should have gone through with the sale. Compared to a San Antonio class LPD, or an Ivan Rogov, the Mistral is a piece of JUNK. It would set Russian shipbuilding back a generation.

Apart from some humanitarian mission capability, Mistrals are offensive ships, indeed. Russians could have learn something even from smaller and less expensive ships. On the other hand, Russia does not posses any ships of that kind at all. Nevertheless, I doubt it is about technology transfer only.

I am not 100% sure, but Mistrals are not allowed to pass through Bosporus strait.

What are those ships intended for ?

Another Mistral mystery:

Electronic equipment stolen from Mistral helicopter carrier built for Russia - media:

"The news agency said two computer hard disks, a motherboard and a graphics board disappeared. A
device that contained helicopter carrier communications system management software was also stolen.
All these were manufactured and installed by French military and technical corporation Thales."

Autonomous pilotry control for manned aircraft from  a shipboard CIC to helicopter mission control? People scoff at such mundane tech, but the French ARE good helicopter builders and they do have a very credible shipborne/helicopter off platform management approach that the USCG uses.

How much do you want to speculate the Thales software was modified for ASW applications at Russian insistence?

And I wouldn't put it past the French to have stolen it themselves. Clever of them if they did.

butch    French, don't give "Mistrals" to Putin!   12/9/2014 3:45:47 AM
Hysteria about transfer \not transfer of the Mistrals to Russia gains steam. Whether these ships are necessary to the Russian fleet? They are almost useless (from word absolutely). They are useless in Baltic, useless in Black Sea, useless in North fleet.
Considering the Pacific, here purely hypothetically Mistrals can be useful, but only in case of loss of the Kuril Islands. Well, to choke at first , and then we will win back.
I even a little a pity for Hollande. He didn't dare to disobey after a hail from Washington. Of course, he understands than it will end. France not only will pay a penalty 3 billion euros, but also will spoil reputation as the weapon supplier. Indians, Arabs and all others of course see everything.
