Subject:
Will the Real XM107 Please Stand Up?

FYI: The current order for the Barrett XM107 is for the semi-auto M82A1M, not the bolt-action M95M bullpup.
It is true that the original XM107 .50 BMG sniper rifle trials were fought out between bolt-action rifles such as the Barrett M95M and the EDM Windrunner. The Barrett M95M won, and a contract award was announced in 1999 (if I recall correctly). However, this decision was suddenly reversed, with the Army deciding that they -really- wanted a semi-auto rifle instead of the original goal of a bolt-action rifle. The end result was the M82A1M, a variant of the USMC's product improved M82A3. (The USMC has already traded in many, if not all, of their M82A1A.)
Personally, I suspect that the name change had more to do with budget requests than anything else. ("You asked for money to purchase the XM107, not the M82A1M.")
Even more interesting is Barrett's XM109 'Payload Rifle'. This is a conversion of the M82A1 to fire the same 25mm ammo used by the XM307 OCSW (Objective Crew Served Weapon). |
