"Yes, but so often Turkish soldiers have rolled triumphantly through London, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, and Delhi, right?"-SC Unfortunately in the past the Turks have ridden through Dehli, although I would dare them to try that today. -HoH

>> Unfortunately in the past the Turks have ridden through Dehli, although I would dare them to try that today. - HoH << Wonder of these Turks would consider those Turks even cousins? I mean many of the "Turkic" invasions of India was in reality one Turkic brigand running from a bigger one in Central Asia. Mohamed of Ghazni was running from the Caliph (more like his Turkish Sultan), Ghori from fall-out of Ghazni's death, Timur from the anarchy of Mongol collapse, Babur from fall of Timurid dynasty (and accompanying rise of Uzbegs). And the final successful invasion was by Nadir Shah and his slave Abdali. While I believe this guy is referring completely to Ottoman and related Turks. Against them, our record is mixed... but something you might find interesting because many of MLI battle honors were won against them. Some in victory, some in defeat. But the end result was the Maratha became as associated with Mid-East as Gharwali in France. OF course it was the typical WWI story of lions led by donkeys, only it was the biggest British surrender between Yorktown and Singapore.

hi, Hound of Hello i agree with your list. But swap korea's position to that of number seven. South korea has a very good tank and is definately better equiped than all those i put after it. much better euipeed than canadian army or Japans "SELF DEFENSE FORCE" definately beter than indias second class baggage train. EVn if S.Korea doesnt have the population, it has a fiar one and if definatley better equpped than those others and is always ready on a warfooting with the north.

shri,

Whether you like it or not, English is the medium of discussion here: Atleast try to write sentences that make sense in English. Your post just drops enough catch-words to flame, but doesn't carry an ounce of reality. India is powerful enough in its own way not to need you to lie and distort reality in its praise. That is if you care about India and its image. If you are just waging a "gorila war" on the Internet, then you are not very new or enterprising at all - we have already had the likes of "Jai Hind", "BJP" etc. on this board.

you should first give your definition of "powerful".

is it economical power? see the list of countries GDP :

1 USA
2 Japan
3 Germany
4 China
5 UK
6 France
7 Italy
8 Canada
9 Spain
10 Brazil

Is it by military power? Nukes (quality, quantity) come into account, as the ultimate weapon :

1 USA
2 Russia
3 France
4 UK
5 China
6 Israel
7 India
8 Pakistan

Is it diplomatic power? influence in the world (UN, NATO, population etc...) is more tricky to classify. USA number 1, Russia number 2, other countries are more regional powers (including France and Uk which don't have a lot of influence in Asia for example)

India, Pakistan and North Korea all have nuclear weapons, besides the Five. In a hypothetical situation, if push comes to shove - that represents real power. You can quibble all about the reality of the situation, quality, training whatever... but all the power of your army is focused on 250 km of front.

Too many factors. Education, equipment, training, political freewill, blah blah blah (you name it!) But as about all of such threads always end up with patriotic and disillusioned or the more sensible, realistic (but still patriotic) people, it's never gonna come to an end but what do you guys say about Gurkhas?

Besides, infantry-wise there is the US Army black berets, the green berets, the Delta Force, the Navy SEALs, the Marines and then over at Russia you have the conscripts, regulars, Spetsnaz and so on. Rather than use their respective countries, using the branch itself is a more accurate measure. Every army does have its best but also have its worst (:
