What would be the best assault rifle for an infantry squad (not for Special Forces)? Surely the german M8 is the way to go. Somewhat better then the M16 and slightly better then the G36, it is probably the most modern, reliable weapon in the West. But why isn't it bullpup? Every modern assault rifle today is bullpup. Just look at the Steyr AUG, FAMAS, L85A2, TAVOR, Type 95 or the FN2000.
But isn't the M8 a bit to much for a simple infantryman?
My choice: the AK-101. The classical Kalashnikov with plastic instead of wood and chambered for 5.56 NATO. It doesn't match a modern assault rifle in terms of accuracy, but it is simple to manufacture, cheap, easy to use and impossible to wear down.
If the weapon simply has to be Western, how about the FN-FNC? Manufactured to modern standards, it has a special tight rifling to make the most of 5.56 SS109 bullets, probably surpassing the M8 in penetration, accuray and range with same bullet. |
