Subject: 7.62x39 M43 vs 5.56x45

I am just a little curious, which round has better penetration vs. body armour, battlefield debris, etc. Given my (limited) experience with the .303 calibre I would automatically say the M43 comes out on top but I wouldn't mind hearing some operators' opinions.

"I might venture to say that 5.45 soviet is in all around lethality better than either of the aforementioned rounds because of its design." How so? From my limited knowledge of ballistics... arent both 5.45 and 5.56 high velocity rounds and will face the same problem of weekness over extended range (>100m)? Since both try to send the energy across with velocity vs. mass, and both are used in aerobic conditions both will face the same drag force F(d) = -kv, right? Or is there more it like the bullet itself is longer and still carries the mass, but has only added the velocity or something?

I believe that the core of the Russian round doesn't fill the nose of the jacket, leaving a hollow. Effectively increasing its ability to give up its energy on impact.
