Subject: Russian Marines

Didn't know they even existed. Does anyone know if they are Elite Infantry like US Marines or are they Commando Light Infantry like UK Royal Marines. I posted this here because the Marines Category seems to be about US Marines only.

Russian Marines are called 'Naval Infantry'. There were only 10,000 of them during the times of the Soviet Union and there are even fewer nowadays. According to most sources, they are highly elite.

My information dates from briefings in the mid-80's, so I may be hopelessly out of date. They are actually called Naval Infantry, and while better than the average of the Russian Army, fall below US standards like the rest of them. The exception is Naval Speznaz, which forms a significant portion of the NI structure. I have heard it speculated that the entire organization existed as a cover for them.

Russian Marines, Naval Infantry, is pretty much spetz naz and are highly trained commando units. Their size has decreased drastically since mid-1980s.

I think raymond was refering to the Naval Infantry Summer uniform which consists of a wide collar white blouse with the red striped long T shirt underneath? link Naval infantry are commanded by the same commander as naval spetsnaz: every fleet commander has one brigade of the latter and a brigade (or regiment) of infantry. Consequently these two formations, both intended for operations in the enemy's rear, co-operate very closely. Normally when the naval infantry makes a landing on an enemy coastline, their operation is preceded by, or accompanied by, spetsnaz operations in the same area. Groups of naval spetsnaz can, of course, operate independently of the naval infantry if they need to, especially in cases where the operations are expected to be in remote areas requiring special skills of survival or concealment. I wonder where you people found out the information about Russian Marines. You know something but not much though. Listen to what I say. Russian Marines has old history if you compare to US Marines. They were created for different reason than US Marines. In Russia the elite forces are (VDV- Vozdushno Desantnye Voiska) Troops Landed Forces. They must have been with skills to do everything, shot from everything and so on. They have elite elite parts for not only military purposes like saboteur in enemy's rear or gain the rear of the enemy. They are supposed to be intellegent forces or like that. But Russian Marine or you say Naval Infantry (which is literally right) has different tasks. They are extremely strong , quick and poweful forces. They do not do what US Marines do. They are "sweep off" forces. They are more physically trained forces. In Russian Military Statute of Russian Marines (Physical training part) is spoken that they must do everything what VDV do plus blah, blah, blah. And they run, run, run and shot, shot, shot. That is all. They gain a victory.
They also have special division where are only officers with brains and they do most critical work. Got questions? Reply

Desant are the paratroopers.
Paratrooper day is a very dangerous day to visit the manezh in moscow due to the number of dead drunk ex-paratroopers congregating there to pick fights.

The Russian Naval Infantry used to have a couple of nice toys. They were the first to use hovercraft in a big way, big nasty armoured and armed ones (if you go to Peitr (sankt petersburg) and take the hydrofoil to peterhof, you go past the slips where they still (?) build them. They also had the ekranoplane monster (6 of them, but they've all been laid up last I heard).
