| I kind of like the idea of regional regiments. The 1st Texas Cavalry has quite a ring to it. It was done that way up to WWI wasnt it? what was the reason for discontinueing that practice to begin with?
The thing I disagree with in the intial post is abolishing the Divisions. A division can act as a totally self supportive command. If need be Brigades can be transfered in and out to tailor a division for its mission. Corps are awfully heavy and out of touch. For some operations I could see it working (Iraq), for others I think Corps command would be out of touch(Afghanistan). As an example ... If I'm not mistaken, V Corps (Are at least a very large contingent) is presently in Iraq. The Kosovo and Bosnian Forces operate in V Corps European area of operations. How would the V Corps commander command and control twenty some odd brigades in Iraq and Four or Five in Kosovo as well as all the different instalations without subordinate command structure? It might work for armies that are concentrated in small geographic areas, I dont think it'd work for the US Army that operates scattered around the world.
We only have basicly four Corps (I,III,V,XVIII... right?)It seems to me that if you abolish the Divisions, you would need to cut up the globe into smaller pieces to be controlled by more Corps. Maybe make them smaller and more flexible.
Since theyd be smaller, you really dont need a Lt Gen to command them. Lets say you let a MG have it. Give that Corps two, three, or four ground brigades. Maybe a brigade of aviation assets too. Probably attach a FA brigade. It'd need a support brigade. Wait ... wouldnt that be a division?
