Overview

Naval combat is a very
interesting form of combat. It is also really
hard to simulate in some
aspects. The aspect that The Lost Admiral
simulates is gaining control of
the sea and capturing the vital harbors
and shipyards needed to control the
sea.

The System

The system is very simple, and does the job. It is
not transparent,
either. Still, it is quite playable and easy to understand
when one goes
through the tutorials.

Manuals

The manuals are
available via the website for the game:
link
The reviewer was able to print out
the manual and refer to it as he went
through the tutorials.

Game Modes

The game is
one-player-versus-the-computer AI. A tournament is available
at the website,
where one can put scores up to compare against other
players.

Game
Features

The Lost Admiral Returns is more or less chess, but played on
the ocean.
Each ship has its strengths and weaknesses. For instance,
carriers can
hit targets several squares away with their planes, but they
cannot take
much damage. Battleships are powerful, and take a lot of damage,
but a
submarine can hit them ? and a battleship cannot hit back. Cruisers
are
superb all-around platforms, but they are expensive.

The
interface is very easy to figure out once a player has completed the

tutorials. The game tends to go pretty quickly. The important lessons

get driven home quickly.

Summary

The Lost Admiral is a superb
introductory naval warfare simulation. The
learning curve is very easy to
adjust to, especially when you have
played the tutorials. The Deluxe Edition
is well worth the price for any
beginners interested in naval warfare. One
important note: Users of
Earthlink should exit their Task Panel before
trying to play the game.
Otherwise, the game will automatically
minimize.
