Subject: Anti-Tank Mines Destroy M1A1 in Iraq
    11/8/2003 9:26:12 PM

In Iraq, a US 4th Infantry Division tank was destroyed (and two of the four man crew killed) when they rolled over three anti-tank mines, buried in the road, one on top of another.

It is interesting to note that the M1 still did not burn out after such a blast.

No ammo cookoff or major fires, but the blast inside certainly was very severe considering the fact it was 3 mines going up -- the opposition seems to realise that the Abrams requires much more than one AT mine to do serious harm. This is very similar to what Hamas does in Israel, using 70 to 200 lb explosive charges against Merkavas. My condolences to the familes of those who lost their lives, this sort of thing is tragic but hard to completely avoid given the nature of the situation in Iraq. NewGuy

Looks like they took the pictures down, I guess they revealed something about the Chobham armor they didn't want to let out. Almost wish I had saved them myself, but then again, better safe than sorry. The thing that go me was that one of the crewmen in the turret actually lived, considering its state, that testafies to the Abrhams toughness.

FYI, "For Official Use Only" (FOUO) is not a security classification. It is a handling guideline for government personnel. "Confidential" is the lowest level of security classification.

I went looking for the pictures elsewhere and found some video still of what looks like a fully crewed BTR-60 going over a mine. link

Hey folks, if you're feeling nosey try this: goto the Russian page that shows the tanks, Get the URL for the Russian version Goto Altavista's site and use the Babblefish to translate from Russian to English Read the new captions. the one I found funny was a picture of iraqi money with the caption 'Now we have dollars with Swastika's' Somethings wrong, there...

Just so you all know, FOUO is NOT a classification level...anything that is FOUO (For Official Use Only) is NOT classified...just limited or restricted distribution. I wouldn't recommend irritating the DoD on their 'sensitive' pix (even though it's known that M1s are not invulnerable to good AT mines), but just for future knowledge, these pix, if FOUO, are not classified.

I heard of a Danish Leopard 1 that backed up over 4 mines stacked on top of each other. Crew survived; but the tank won't ever rock and roll again. The manufacturer was very interested in getting the wreck though.
