Three cheers for Australia. Hip, hip hoor......nah ferk it!

Garage sale anybody?  I've a couple of Mirage1110's to sell too. Low mileage, only ever taken off a few times (crashed a few as well). Would go well in a third world air force.

4Sale: 11 SeaSprogs. Good for gate guardians. Will barter for palm oil.

Still most of the aquisitions have been pretty good. And so many and across so many different areas.

Can anyone name a defence procurement or development that came way under budget, way undertime, way over achived and wasn't canned for some other political reason.. These things are never easy.

Australia is doing pretty well concidering its trying to do so many things it hasn't built, operated or developed before. Its creating a truely independant and well balanced force covering all aspects.

Australia will soon have capabilities simular to a US amphibious stike group, just on a smaller scale. And two of them. A 1/10th scale USA.

C-17's are a stand out in my mind. Not only were they delivered (still being) on time, the decision for many folk came out of the blue. I bet it was one of the fastest agreements Costello ever signed off on!

I believe the Abrams have been under budget, however, that is the most positive thing you will ever hear me utter about them.

I also think LIFT was under budget, however, development was a bit stretched to say the least. Probably one of our better procurements in many years.

i understand the skunkworks used to do it routinely.  engineers unbounded by gov't supervision can be pretty impressive.

Ive noticed that Australia only has 50k people  in the military and am not sure about how many are in the navy. With these new amphib ships coming online will the ARN have to increase personnel to staff these ships? Will a new port have to be built to accomodate these ships? Will new escorts have to be built to defend these huge ships? I would assume these ships dont sail alone but in a group kind of like a carrier battle group.

I'd say less than a third of the total numbers are Navy.  It would be very difficult to find more folk as we can't now. No new ports should be needed, as Fleet Base East and West would have growth potential to handle these. Remember that Sydney has hosted aircraft carriers throughout RAN history. As for escorts, I doubt it as we have about a dozen frigates now and we never operate them at sea all at once (not that we could man them anyway).

Well the AEGIS equipped destroyers (first on the list) are very capable of escort, they are supposed to shoot down ballitic missiles after all.

Ok lets say Austrailia got into a spat with Malaysia and was going to do a landing somewhere to battle it out.[ dunno why just say its happening] Would the ARN  use both of these LHCs putting all their eggs in 1 basket or just 1? If using just 1 how many escort ships are needed to protect just 1 LHC? Does that leave enough escorts to be able to use the other LHC effectively? I guess what I  keep thinking about is it seems these 2 ships use up all of your assests if theyre used with nothing to use for patrol or other important tasks needed in time of war or crisis.
