There are some points that need clearing up regarding the British Army and Bayonets:

1- The British Army does not fix Bayonets and charge in extended line as in the American War of Independence or First World War.
2- Bayonet fighting is however an integral part of section level battle drills. In the final phase of an assault two blokes will crawl forward and clear a position using grenades, rounds and bayoneting anything that is left looking even vaguely human.
3- The British Army may not have the resources of the US Army but an assault will certainly not happen unless the commander on the ground has sufficient ammo to suppress the enemy position and any depth positions. He will not resort to using just bayonets.
4- The blokes who fixed their bayonets were from Princess of Wales?s Royal Regiment who were providing QRF in the area when the Argylls were ambushed.
5- Why should the commander on the ground be court marshalled for ordering fix bayonets? He was doing his job. His orders were probably along the lines of kill or destroy the enemy in the area of X. The job of the infantry is to close with the enemy and kill him.
