National Guard in Iraq

Over a quarter million National Guard and reserve troops were called up to active service for the war in Iraq. Many of these troops were also activated for the 1991 Gulf War, and for peacekeeping operations in the Balkans during the 1990s.  National Guard troops in Iraq are not amused. Most National Guard troops enlist with the idea that they will only be activated if there is a local emergency or a major war. This has not been the case since the end of the Cold War, and current recruiting efforts are falling twenty percent short of goals. Normally, National Guard troops train one weekend a month, and for two weeks in the Summer.
