German Offensive Threatens The Homeland

September 26, 2009: U.S. citizens have been warned by their government to exercise care, if travelling to Germany in the next few weeks. Those who do go, are warned to be alert about their security, because of frequent recent al Qaeda threats to make attacks in Germany. The terrorists are trying to influence the September 27 elections there. But the Islamic terrorist group is believed to be so damaged and disorganized (by world-wide counter-terrorism efforts) that an attack might be delayed until a week or so after the elections. The Islamic terrorists are trying to frighten Germans into withdrawing their troops from Afghanistan. It is there, and across the border in Pakistan, that the Taliban and al Qaeda are fighting to keep government forces out of areas that can be used as terrorist bases (for training, planning and resting).

It was only this year that the 4,200 German troops were finally released from an ROE (Rules of Engagement) that prevented them from attacking terrorists. The German troops promptly went on the offensive and have called for more weapons and ammunition to be sent. The Taliban have been getting out of the way, and calling for help.

Nice to see Germany sharing in the joys and sufferings of the West. :)

Hope there's little suffering.

German exit polls show Merkel retains office

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel defeated her foreign minister Sunday to win another four-year term, according to exit polls reported by German television network NTV.TEST

NTV reported Merkel's center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party received 33.7 percent of the vote, based on exit poll projections.

The polls show Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's center-left Social Democrats received 23.4 percent, the network reported.

"Not only are you happy, I am very happy as well," Merkel told cheering supporters at her headquarters. "We've accomplished something great. We've done it. We've reached our election goal, to retain a stable majority in Germany and a new government with a new coalition."

The crowd chanted, "Angie, Angie, Angie."

Steinmeier, meanwhile, conceded what he called "a bitter defeat" for the Social Democrats.

"The voters have decided, and the result is a bad day," Steinmeier said in a speech to supporters.

He thanked those who helped lead his campaign and those who supported him.

The two parties currently are in a coalition, with Steinmeier as foreign minister.

Few doubted that Merkel's party would receive the most votes. The question was what kind of coalition will be formed -- another broad centrist one, across the political divide, or a more right-leaning one.

Merkel favors cutting taxes to spur growth, while Steinmeier opposes tax breaks. The country is deep in debt. Video What's at stake in the German election »

Voters chose members of the lower house of parliament, or Bundestag, who will pick the head of government.

Each German had two votes -- one for a member of parliament representing a district and another for a political party.

The election Sunday followed release of a threatening videos from al Qaeda and the Taliban warning Germans not to vote for leaders who want to keep the country's troops in Afghanistan.

Security was tightened at airports and train stations, and authorities on Saturday banned all flights over the Oktoberfest beer festival until it ends on October 4. The annual event attracts about 6 million people.

About 62 million people were eligible to vote, out of Germany's population of 82 million.

PS: Im celebrating at the moment, my "own" party (FDP- liberals) have won the election and will now rule together with the CDU -  Social Democrats got their worst poll since the times of the second Reich when the Kaiser was still in charge ...  This election also means that the Taliban thread backfired - both ruling Parties have called for an extension (up to 6000 troops and the real power of the German Army including Leopard, Pzh2000, maybe German Tornados with combat role)  Time to cheer and be happy.  There will be no retreat from Afghanistan for Germany, the voter said no.

blkfoot    And the ROE   9/28/2009 1:06:27 AM
Isn't it interesting that the German forces have been released from that damn restrictive ROE and have bveen kicking but, but now the United States wants to tie down our fighting forces with a heavy handed restricted ROE...

Rules Of Engagement are good things to keep attrocities from happening, but should never put the Fighting forces in a weakend position and cause more casualties...Counter productive and when your on the pointy end of the stick, damn well stupid.

Im a little unsure about this - arent the new ROE, ISAF-wide ? ie they apply to both the US and allied contingents?

I guess its pretty ironic that way- the germans Finally get some op-freedom from their government, but just then McChrystal implements fairley restrictive ROE ISAF-wide..

Im pretty sure theyll still continue to kick ass, though.

If Terry would be able to launch a major attack within germany they would have done it before elections, not after the elections. All talking, no action. I'll have a beer tomorrow at the Oktoberfest with no fear.

The conservative-liberal new goverment would mostly profit from an after-election attack because this would simply strengthen their internal security program and not change much for the external military situation.

I have the impression that the social democrats have less moral issues using military power while the conservatives have little problems with increasing inner surveilance though both don't differ too much. From all parties inside germany only the post-communists have a clear program of withdrawing from afghanistan - that may have gotten them half of their 12% so this leaves at least 88% of votes which don't care enough about a fast redraw.

This recent Al-Quaida threat Video was a complete failure, as it didnt stop the new German "War Government" (as it will be called soon ^^) beeing elected, and even gaining majority in both Parliament and Congress. (Bundestag and Bundesrat)
It is now too late to attack, because it would fully legitimize a much larger mission, leading to the exact opposite of Al-Quaidas goal. (they have lost anyway, because there will be no German retreat for at least 4 years - and the mission will be strenghened to 6000 Troops with weapon full force - anyway now)
On the other hand if they dont do anything now, they will be seen even more as a joke, as all their previous effords were screwed by the German Police and Secret Service.  There is a whole row of Al-Quaida "lifers" incarcerated in Stammheim jail already, occupying the same block that was previously reserved for RAF Terrorists but was deserted lately as they died or were released after 30 - 40 years.

HAH -  Today the first news leaked out that during the Coalition talks of the new Government of Germany, the mandate number of 7000 soldiers was discussed !

link
translation by me:

"According to a Deutschlandfunk report, the German government considers building up the Bundeswehr contingent in Afghanistan. In context with the extension of the Bundeswehr mandate due in December, Bundestag could possibly raise the limit of German soldiers to be deployed to 7,000. Bundeswehr is currently limited to deploying 4,500 soldiers. "
