Surface Forces: Big, Fast And Cheap
Next Article → AIR WEAPONS: An Eyeful For Machinegunners

September 15, 2009: India has a new class of patrol ships in service, and they are proving very successful. The WJFACs (Water Jet-Propelled Fast-Attack Craft) are 600 ton, 150 foot long ships with water jet propulsion. This means the ships can operate in shallow (as little as 5 meters) water. The first two entered service two years ago, a second pair last year, and ten will eventually be in service.

Armed with a 30mm autocannon, shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles and two 12.7mm machine-guns, the ship can also be equipped with sonar and some anti-submarine torpedoes (the navy is secretive on this point.) The ship has surface and air search radar and is air conditioned. Top speed is 63 kilometers an hour, and cruising distance (at about 35 kilometers an hour) is 3,600 kilometers. Crew size varies depending on mission (and whether or not anti-submarine gear is on board), but is usually 30-40 sailors. These Indian designed and built ships cost about $10.4 million each.

Sorry about the bad link.  There don't seem to be that many sources in English re this boat (but lots on S Korea's AEGIS!!) but it's an interesting boat.  Interestingly most (if it happens) naval engatement will be handled by these small patrol crafts and not AEGIS around Korea.  Few things that I know from reading Korean sources:

The main engine is actually for a much bigger ship but it was put into this boat for the power, required due to its heavy weight.

The main bridge area is wrapped in kevlar to increase survivability of the crew.  They chose this because of what they learned from the 2002 West Sea Naval Engagement.  In the naval engagement, N Korea boat fired 1st shot (believed to be 105mm removed from a tank) without warning and hit the bridge of the South, quite luckily.  This killed/injured command staff and knocked out main fire control system.  A second S Korea patrol craft (this class of boat always work in pairs) engaged the N Korean boats but the 1st boat was doomed.

Because of the extra protection, the boat is significantly heavier than similar types.  But the PKX's top speed is 41.5 knots.  Lesson learned with lives/blood was definitely not ignored.

S Korea is going to make about dozens of these.  2/3 will be anti ship/gun boat type and the 1/3 will be anti-sub type.  Currently 2nd and 3rd are under construction at one of the many many shipyards in S Korea.
