The U.S. Navy has twelve carrier task forces, each cost some five billion dollars to build, and $750 million a year to operate. About half the annual operating cost is for payroll, which is why the navy is so keen on reducing crew size. This is being done by looking carefully at what every member of the crew does, and then see if theres another way to get the job done without that sailor on board. This has resulted in proposals for automation, dropping a lot of jobs (many are done more because of tradition than for need) and stationing some of sailors ashore (communicating via satellite link.) The goal is to cut crew size by half, or more, saving a lot of money.
